No. 13 Texas Tech women stay undefeated

? Shauntal Nobles scored a career-high 14 points to help No. 13 Texas Tech remain undefeated with an 81-63 win over Cal State Bakersfield in the Surf N' Slam Classic on Thursday night.

Texas Tech (11-0) is off to its best start since winning 15 straight to open the 2004-05 season. The Lady Raiders are one of six undefeated Division I teams.

Monique Smalls and Mary Bokenkamp each had 10 points for the Lady Raiders, who scored 15 straight points in the second half for a 72-43 lead over the outmanned Roadrunners.

Kristine Herman and Ciarra Ford led Cal State Bakersfield (3-14) with 19 points apiece. The Roadrunners, hard hit with injuries, suited up just six players.

Texas Tech, playing its first game in eight days, used its overwhemling size to outrebound Cal State Bakersfield 59-31, including 29 offensive rebounds.

Sudan: Khartoum University's students hold massive protest against police, administration

December 29, 2011 (KHARTOUM) ? A massive student protest took place on Thursday inside the campus of Khartoum University against the background of last week?s events in which the Sudanese police entered the university twice and cracked down on students.

JPEG - 22.9 kb
Thursday?s protest at Khartoum University (ST)

The genesis of the crisis dates back to Thursday, 22 December, when police forces entered the university and fired teargas to disperse a protest held inside by students affiliated to Al-Manasir, a riverine population displaced by the construction of a government dam upcountry, and others belonging to anti-government groups.

In protest of Thursday?s crackdown and a subsequent university administration?s resolution authorizing the police to enter the campus, the students refused to sit for exams and held a sit-in on Sunday, prompting new clashes with police forces which broke in again and arrested over 70 students.

Around 5,000 students toured the university?s campus on Thursday and delivered a strongly-worded memo to the university?s administration, calling for the resignation of its director Sidiq Haiati on the grounds of what they termed as acts of ?administrative collusion? which allowed police forces to invade the campus and arrest students.

The memo also called for holding police forces accountable and receiving an apology from the ministry of interior as well as compensating the students who were affected by the incidents.

Sudanese authorities accuse opposition political parties of standing behind the unrest in Khartoum University. The chief of police in Khartoum State this week said that their forces were ready to continue fighting the protests.

Sudan has largely survived this year?s wave of popular uprisings which swept across the Middle East and toppled long-ruling autocratic regimes in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

But public discontent is growing due to worsening economic conditions created by the departure of oil-producing South Sudan as well as the eruption of wars in the border states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile.

Eye Exam Catches Cancer in 3-Year-Old

TYRONE, Ga. - A metro Atlanta family says a comprehensive eye exam quite possibly save their little girl's life, when it alerted them to a condition in her chest.

When 2-year-old Kamryn Munoz's eye started to look a little strange, her parents thought it might have been the result of a little sunscreen getting in it. But it took a deeper look to find just what was going wrong.

Chad and Kari Munoz say taking their two daughters, Kaitlin and Kamryn, on vacation a couple of summers ago was a blast.

"We did Sea World and a few water parks. We had a great time. It was a really awesome vacation," said Chad Munoz.

But they had no idea how the trip would change their lives. As the family returned home, they noticed Kamryn's left eye began to droop.

"In the car on the ride home, I turned around and I could tell. And I said to him you know, I think that sunscreen really did something to her eye," said Kari Munoz.

After going to the pediatrician and still seeing no change, the Munoz's decided to see their optometrist, Dr. Scott Williamson for a comprehensive eye exam.

"As she was walking back, as I was taking her back, immediately I knew what she had," said Dr. Scott Williamson.

Kamryn was diagnosed with Horner's Syndrome. Dr. Williamson says it's a rare condition most eye doctors will only see once in their lifetime. And although the symptoms initially affect the eye, the danger has very little to do with vision but can be a signal of cancer elsewhere in the body.

"When we see that, especially in a congenital case, we know that there is probably a tumor in the chest that has created this. It's a very unique type of condition," said Dr. Williamson.

"It was the most frightening experience that you could ever imagine," said Chad Munoz.

The neuroblastoma tumor is treatable if you catch it early. Within a month, Kamryn had surgery and is now, at 3, a cancer survivor. The Munoz's say they are advocates of thorough, comprehensive eye exams. It's what saved their little girl's life.

Dr. Williamson says a comprehensive eye exam should be conducted at least yearly. He says a variety of health issues can be detected including, diabetes and high cholesteral.

U.S. weighs travel request for Yemen's president

HONOLULU (AP) ? The Obama administration is considering whether to allow Yemen's outgoing president into the United States for medical treatment.

A senior administration official says President Ali Abdullah Saleh's office requested that he be allowed to receive specialized treatment in the U.S. for injuries sustained in a June attack on his compound.

Saleh announced Saturday that he was leaving for the U.S. in order to help calm tensions in his country following a fresh wave of violence. But he said his travel was not for medical treatment.

Saleh's presence in Yemen has angered many there, who say he wants to continue to wield his influence despite agreeing to transfer power following months of protests.

The official requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

India Ink: Frustration and Hope at Hazare's Fast in Mumbai

December 27, 2011, 8:04 am By VIKAS BAJAJ

Kushal Malde, a 23-year old who works at an Indian bank in the Bandra Kurla Complex.

As Indian lawmakers began a much-anticipated debate in Parliament about a bill to create a new anti-corruption agency known as the lokpal, activist Anna Hazare began a fast in Mumbai on Tuesday. He started his day by paying his respects at a statue of Gandhi in the coastal neighborhood of Juhu before arriving at a big, open ground at the Bandra Kurla Complex in the center of the city that is often used for fairs, rallies and concerts.

The size of the crowd at the rally ground was modest relative to the crowds he attracted during his last fast in August at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi.

In Mumbai today, the ground was divided in two, with one section reserved for women and the other for men. The section for men was about half full when I arrived in the early afternoon and proceeded to fill up over the several hours I spent there, with a few thousand protestors. The women?s section, however, had few people and many of them were men and boys.

We?ve posted video interviews with two of the several protestors I spoke to about why they had come to the rally in the middle of a workday: banker Kushal Malde, above, and web designer Ajay Verma, below:

Ajay Verma, a 46-year old freelance web designer from the suburb of Vasai.

It should appeal to dance mavens, and to folks who have no idea what a pas de deux is.

The power and intelligence of Bausch's approach, which at times seems more cerebral than sensual, is communicated.

An intimate and ravishingly filmed tribute to German dancer Pina Bausch.

We are among these dancers in their pain and joy and longing. We hear them breathe, feel the heat of their skin, smell their sweat, sense the pounding of their hearts, the ache in their thighs and feet.

A tribute to Pina Bausch, one of modern dance's most groundbreaking choreographers, pic lets the artist's work speak for itself via big, juicy slabs of performance.

Wim Wenders' stylish 3D mirrors the bizarrely captivating world of choreographer Pina Bausch.

Thanks to 3D technology it's dance film quite unlike any other, which was filmmaker Wim Wenders' intention, and it's a transporting experience for the uninitiated and the cognoscenti alike.

...filmmaking as glorious music.

An amazing and appealing 3D documentary by the inimitable Wim Wenders on the innovative dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch.

A movie that does more than demolish the invisible wall between film and dance; it breaks the barrier that intervenes, even at a live performance, between seat and stage.

Less a strict documentary than a heartfelt - and visually gorgeous - celebration of Bausch's work and her mode of working.

Pina belongs in the rare category of adventurous material matched with a thrillingly immersive form -- suck it, Avatar.

Beyond a nostalgic tribute for cognoscenti, this visually stunning film is a terrific introduction. It will be an essential resource and inspiration for future dance fans.

An interest in modern dance isn't necessary to enjoy the film.

No es una pel?cula sobre Pina Bausch sino para Pina Bausch, una suerte de hermoso tributo o regalo que le hacen (y que nos hacen) sus bailarines de la mano de un director que filma como los dioses.

Richly cinematic, using the camera to direct our attention, change our perspective, and significantly alter our sense of the space and the shape of the dancer's bodies.

Unlike so many 3D films, Pina is a prime example of how big a difference the process can make to the film-going experience.

By virtue of its subject alone, enthusiasts of modern dance will devour Pina. If it was in a bottle, they'd drink every drop; if it was in a squeeze-tube, they would rub it on their skin.

Fish Oil May Hold Key to Leukemia Cure

Dec 23 2011 --- A compound produced from fish oil that appears to target leukemia stem cells could lead to a cure for the disease, according to Penn State researchers. The compound -- delta-12-protaglandin J3, or D12-PGJ3 -- targeted and killed the stem cells of chronic myelogenous leukemia, or CML, in mice, said Sandeep Prabhu, associate professor of immunology and molecular toxicology in the Department of Veterinary and Medical Sciences. The compound is produced from EPA -- Eicosapentaenoic Acid -- an Omega-3 fatty acid found in fish and in fish oil, he said.

"Research in the past on fatty acids has shown the health benefits of fatty acids on cardiovascular system and brain development, particularly in infants, but we have shown that some metabolites of Omega-3 have the ability to selectively kill the leukemia-causing stem cells in mice," said Prabhu. "The important thing is that the mice were completely cured of leukemia with no relapse."

The researchers, who released their findings in the current issue of Blood, said the compound kills cancer-causing stem cells in the mice's spleen and bone marrow. Specifically, it activates a gene -- p53 -- in the leukemia stem cell that programs the cell's own death. "p53 is a tumor suppressor gene that regulates the response to DNA damage and maintains genomic stability," Prabhu said.

Killing the stem cells in leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells, is important because stem cells can divide and produce more cancer cells, as well as create more stem cells, Prabhu said.

The current therapy for CML extends the patient's life by keeping the number of leukemia cells low, but the drugs fail to completely cure the disease because they do not target leukemia stem cells, said Robert Paulson, associate professor of veterinary and biomedical sciences, who co-directed this research with Prabhu.

"The patients must take the drugs continuously," said Paulson. "If they stop, the disease relapses because the leukemia stem cells are resistant to the drugs."

Current treatments are unable to kill the leukemia stem cells, Paulson noted. "These stem cells can hide from the treatment, and a small population of stem cells give rise to more leukemia cells," said Paulson. "So, targeting the stem cells is essential if you want to cure leukemia."

During the experiments, the researchers injected each mouse with about 600 nanograms of D12-PGJ3 each day for a week. Tests showed that the mice were completely cured of the disease. The blood count was normal, and the spleen returned to normal size. The disease did not relapse.

In previous experiments, the compound also killed the stem cells of Friend Virus-induced leukemia, an experimental model for human leukemia.

The researchers focused on D12-PGJ3 because it killed the leukemia stem cells, but had the least number of side effects. The researchers currently are working to determine whether the compound can be used to treat the terminal stage of CML, referred to as Blast Crisis. There are currently no drugs available that can treat the disease when it progresses to this stage.

Nigeria coast braces for biggest oil spill in 13 years (Reuters)

LAGOS/LONDON (Reuters) ? Nigerian authorities were putting emergency measures in place on Thursday to prevent an oil spill from a Royal Dutch Shell facility, the biggest leak in Nigeria for more than 13 years, washing up on its densely populated coast.

Tuesday's spill, which Shell said happened while a tanker was loading oil, has led to the complete shutdown of the company's 200,000 barrel per day (bpd) Bonga facility, about 120 kilometers off the coast of the West African nation.

Shell's pipelines in Nigeria's onshore Niger delta have spilled several times, which it usually blames on sabotage attacks and oil theft, though it did not in this case.

"It's comparable to what happened in 1998 with the Exxon Mobil spill, in terms of the quantity that has been spilled, it's the biggest since then," Peter Idabor, director of Nigeria's National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), told Reuters by telephone from the capital Abuja.

In 1998, some 40,000 barrels leaked from a ruptured Mobil pipeline off the coast of Nigeria.

"We have in the region of 20,000 barrels that has been spilled into the environment ... and is clearly moving to our coastline," Idabor added.

He said 210 tons of dispersants were on the way to deal with the spill and that oil booms - containers made from sheets of plastic that trap the oil to stop it reaching the shore - had been deployed.

"We are a lot more prepared than we were in 1998," he said.

But he added that local fishermen living along the coast had been advised to move away.

"For the fishermen who are there, there is a lot of wave action. Of course, our advice would be for them to move away up to areas of water less affected."

CLEAN UP

The Anglo-Dutch oil major said "less than 40,000 barrels of oil" had leaked into the ocean in this latest spill. The flow of oil had now halted, a company spokesman said on Wednesday.

Around half of the spilled oil had now dissipated due to natural dispersion and evaporation, Shell said in a statement on Thursday.

Bonga accounts for around 10 percent of monthly oil flows from OPEC member Nigeria, the continent's largest exporter of crude oil, according to Reuters data.

A Shell spokesman said on Thursday there is not yet any restart date for the field and that it will not resume production until after both an investigation and any necessary repairs have been completed.

"To accelerate the clean-up at sea, we are deploying vessels with dispersants to break up the oil sheen at sea. We are mobilizing airplanes that will support the vessels in this operation," Shell's country chairman in Nigeria, Mutiu Sunmonu said, after apologizing for the leak the previous day.

The oil major's website has a series of photographs taken at the site, showing a rainbow-colored oil sheen on the ocean's surface.

BP's Macondo well ruptured in April last year, causing nearly 5 million barrels of oil to spew into the sea in what was the worst U.S. marine oil spill.

Bonga was due to load around 161,000 bpd on five tankers in January, according to oil loading programs and its closure has boosted prices for other Nigerian crude grades.

A U.N. report in August criticized Shell and the Nigerian government for contributing to 50 years of pollution in a region of the Niger Delta which it says needs the world's largest ever oil clean-up, costing an initial $1 billion and taking up to 30 years.

Hi today i found out, that the company ASPIRE VENUES..... have gone into liquidation. The wedding was to take place on May 17th, at Chewton Place, Aspire Venues, took full payment for the wedding breakfast and the evening buffet, and today we recieve a email saying the company is in liquidation, where do we stand....... We did not have wedding insurance, but we are devastated. They also own two more venues and i have just found out that the contract with one of them ended in November,

Aspire Venues do all types of events, today a christmas party that was due to go ahead tonight at Chewton Place keynsham, was told this morning that it was cancelled...... VIA EMAIL..... Surely, we as consumers have rights... we have paid in full thousands of pounds, and now have nothing for our money, Iam in shock, what can i do.... where do i start to retrieve my money, We saved for years for our only daughters wedding..... and in one EMAIL we have lost it all.......

CAN some one help. What are my rights, i have proof of payment, but i guess this means nothing if the company no longer exists.

I do not have thousands of pounds to book another venue, and only 5 months to the wedding day.

Please help, anyone else had similar circumstances.

Thanks
Kim

Sorry if i posted in the wrong section, We paid the depoist of ?750.00 by cheque, and the full balance 8 weeks later also by Cheque. as they contacted us offering us 10% discount if we paid the balance in full. At the time, i thought cheque was best as i had proof of them cashing it. Now after reading all day, i see credit card would of been the best, Also Wedding Insurance, but you never ever think this will happen to you.

Have you spoken to them? This link from today states that it is another venue and all the others are still ok. - Sorry, i've just double checked and this was from November

I've also checked on Companies House and the company 'Aspire Group Ltd' (company no 06894587) is not listed as being either in Liquidation or Administration.

Yes i did the same, thinking the email was a prank...... but the last time it was updated was november, and when i rang the company, you get a voicemail telling you about the liquidation, and since i have recieved 4 emails, advising me to wait to see if they get bought out..... lets hope they do, and the new owners honour those that have paid in full.

hun - I am so sorry this has happened! its a pity you paid by cheque, but it cant be helped. I am sorry I cannot be more upbeat - but you will probably have to find another venue and pay for it! unless you took out insurance?
if the venue has gone into liquidation it can take months, if not years, before creditors are repaid. Sorry!

If he business IS taken over by new owners they may honour prior bookings - check with them!

There sure are a lot of laws in this country - but there aint much Justice!!!

If it's a limited company and it's being wound up because it's insolvent you will in all likelihood join the long list of creditors. Who may receive a few pennies to the pound or whatever depending on what assets there are. A company of that nature won't have any fixed-assets to speak of, it's all about their order book and goodwill. The request to pay the balance for a discount was very obviously and cynically done to improve their cash-flow in an attempt to stave off the liquidation. This is the sort of thing that businesses experience all the time, especially in the current economic climate but that's no comfort to you. Expect to get offers of alternative arrangements from the ex-directors' new company who still have your details and know that you'll need somewhere else now but make sure that you do not give these particular shysters your business. You can be confident that they will have got their wages out before the worst happened. It ruddy stinks, doesn't it? You have my sympathy for what it's worth. i.e. not very much under the circs.

Gingrich Says Gay Marriage Supporters Should Vote for Obama (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY| According to the Huffington Post, while GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich was at a campaign stop in Oskaloosa, Iowa, an adjunct professor of writing at William Penn University, Scott Arnold, who is a Democrat, asked how Gingrich plans to engage gay Americans.

Gingrich ultimately told the man that if the most important issue for them is the definition of marriage, they should vote for Obama. We already know that Gingrich's own sister, Candace Gingrich-Jones, does not support her brother and will be voting for Obama, though she's just one person. It sounds like he feels comfortable with the amount of supporters he has to alienate gays, and people who are in support of same-sex marriage.

According to ABC News, 4 percent of the population is gay; the percentage of Americans who support gay marriage is 53 percent, according to the latest Gallup poll. Perhaps many of these same people would be voting for our current president regardless of Newt and his views, but it still seems like a large amount of voters to disregard.

No matter how loudly some like to cry about it, the tide is changing in America. LGBTs should not be discriminated against, and should be allowed into legal, committed loving relationships if they so chose. Certainly a man who has cheated on his spouses and has been married three times should be the last to make such a judgment.

On Wednesday, December 21, just a day after Gingrich made the comment that supporters of gay marriage should vote for Obama, a photo and report by the Associated Press documented an historic event. Two female Naval Petty Officers shared the first same-sex kiss at a ship's return.

The repeal of the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell" rule led to the two women sailors becoming the first to share the coveted "first kiss" on the pier after one of them returned from 80 days at sea. Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta of Placerville, Calif., remarked, "It's nice to be able to be myself. It's been a long time coming."

Though many conservatives would like to see our country's progress go in reverse, the majority of Americans don't want that to happen, and are in support of human beings entering a loving relationship whether the person is the same or opposite gender.

This summer, the legalization of same-sex marriage in New York became yet another historic milestone for human rights, proving that there may be a light at the end of the tunnel, and some day love will overcome bigotry and hate, despite Mr. Gingrich's so-called values.

If Nicki Minaj's latest Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded track, "Stupid Hoe," seems off-the-wall, her fans should probably expect the video to be as well. And given the hints that the fierce MC has dropped on Twitter, something zany is definitely in store.

Over the course of the last few days, the singer has been keeping her Barbz and Kenz up-to-date on the video shoot, which will by all accounts feature multiple costume changes, multiple setups and even some fried chicken.

"Next shot is in a bathing suit and [hairstylist] terrence got me eating fried chkn and carrot cake!" she tweeted, later adding, "gettin my nailz done. still shootin the vid. 2 more looks!!!!" The rapper later posted a photo of her manicure, which featured animal prints and rainbow colors.

"Barbz, shld i twerk in the stupid hoe vid???" she asked. "but i 4got my twerkin moves ... dang." She may not end up twerkin' in the video, but as of Wednesday, she still had some work to do on the clip, so it seems anything could make the final cut.

"Stupid Hoe" will be the second video off of Minaj's February 14 release. Earlier this month, she teased the clip for "Roman Reloaded," the album's lead single.

"Well, [Roman] was there [in Moscow] secretly because [alter ego] Martha wanted him to go there, so they put him in this thing with monks and nuns; they were trying to rehabilitate him," Minaj explained. "But I can't tell exactly what happened, you'll just see it in the video format, but let's just say he got out of there." Minaj added that the video for "Roman in Moscow" "will be shot real soon."

Those aren't the only Minaj videos that fans are excited for. Her clip for Madonna's lead single, "Gimme All Your Luvin," had everyone buzzing when she tweeted about a kiss she shared with the Queen of Pop. While little is known about that video, a behind-the-scenes photo of Nicki donning red sunglasses and hanging out with M.I.A. on set hit the Web late Tuesday night.

Fusion Garage's website goes dark -- has it bit the dust?

Perhaps it's the comeback that wasn't meant to be -- Fusion Garage has apparently silenced its radios for over a week on Twitter, and more than a month on Facebook. Potentially worse, its website is now unreachable, displaying only a "Database connection error." Although its Grid10 tablet was set for a delayed October 1st release, some folks over at The JooJoo Forum and on Fusion Garage's Facebook page are reporting that they've yet to receive their tabs, weeks after placing orders.

We've fielded more than a few concerned tips saying the same, and sadly, that's just the tip of this iceberg, as there's also been mention of slow correspondence from the company, with wishy-washy responses about what's going on. One forum poster mentions eventually hearing back from its public relations agency -- this after contacting FG for order details -- with an indication that a refund is on the way.

We've reached out for an official comment but received nothing but silence. That said, we're hearing we aren't the only ones having a hard time getting in contact with Fusion Garage's executives, leaving us with a sinking suspicion that there will be no third go 'round for the house that Chandra built. Ordered a Grid10 yourself, or still waiting on your free JooJoo replacement? Let us know about your experience in the comments below.
