PFT: Lions coach has warned players, WR says

Tom Brady, Jospeh AddaiAP

The father of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady recently made a stir by suggesting that Brady Sr. would be be ?very hesitant? to let his son play football if he were a young boy in 2012.

Generating far less attention was Brady Sr.?s concession that, if Brady Jr. were 14 now, ?and he really wanted to play,? Brady Sr. would still let him.

Brady Jr. has now chimed in on the situation, in comments to our friend and colleague (I need to say nice things so he keeps sending in the links) Tom Curran of CSN New England.

?Everybody has a different take,? Brady said.? ?My dad is always happy to share his opinion with anybody that will ask, often contrary to my own beliefs.?

Brady then explained that, like remarks from earlier in the month made by Kurt Warner, Tom Brady Sr. spoke form the perspective? of basic parental concern.

?He?s always a concerned parent and we as parents are always concerned about our kids,? Brady said.? ?You never want to see your kid fall down and bump his elbow.? You?re always concerned when things are out of your control as a parent.

?But there?s no job I?d rather have in the world.? I?m so fortunate to be in a job that?s so fun for me every day.? What football has taught me in the grand scheme of my life about being a part of a team and working with people and hard work, discipline and mental toughness ? all those things that serve me in life.? The lessons far outweigh anything I?ve experienced in terms of injuries.?

That?s the balance every parent and player eventually has to strike.? As long as the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks, kids will want to play football.? And their parents in all likelihood will let them.

?[W]e all understand the risks and we have to do our best,? Brady said.? ?I love playing this sport.? It will be hard to give it up.?

Curran also points out something that needs to be remembered as the ?should kids play football?? debate continues.? The game is safer at every level than it ever has been, and it will only get safer.

Will there still be risks?? Sure.? But unless we want our children?s only activity to consist of playing Trivial Pursuit from the wrong side of a plastic bubble, there will always be risks.

Exploring Straightforward Programs Of Business Outsourcing ...

Outsourcing is similar to hiring a staff. A business person recognizes the importance of leveraging other people?s time and skills to their advantage. To some, outsourcing is an uncommon name for something that they know all to well. There are very few things that can grow your business faster than outsourcing your work out to people. If your marketing is already producing results then you can have far greater results by hiring workers. The most successful marketers understand this concept very well. Outsourcing is simple but it looks simpler than what it really is. Patience is required with outsourcing because you will not see instant results. Keep reading to discover proven outsourcing methods.

The first thing you can easily outsource is the product creation part. That?s right; you can have your product created by a professional, while you sit back and relax. If there?s a business task that needs to be done, you can find someone who will be happy to get paid to do it. This is extremely common in IM, in fact none of your customers will ever have the slightest clue you didn?t write that great new ebook. No one knows, and if it?s good people will love and send in their testimonials. Even posts to your blog or your newsletter can be hired out. If you choose this route, you just need to be sure you have a good writer on your staff. An important tip to keep in mind when outsourcing your tasks is that you need to offer the worker a test project first to see his/her caliber. This is before you assign the complete project to the worker. This is an effective way to gauge the quality of their work and other factors. For example, if you have to get 20 articles written every month, you can give this writer 5-10 articles first to test the waters and see he/she is good enough to hire for the job. The best approach is to gradually scale-up the level of responsibility, and you?ll be able to filter out anyone or keep them because you know they?ll do well for you. You?ll be able to retain those who do well for you, or keep them on file so you can hire them for future projects. Look at considering Bodybuilding.com Coupons for in-depth advice.

One of the important tasks that you can outsource for your Internet marketing business is customer service. All the customer service needs and responsibilities are very time consuming, to say the least. If you?re established, this can save you a huge amount of time and aggravation. Whatever you do, be very sure you pick someone who will do a great job and never mess up in this important area of your business. That is why so many marketers outsource as much as possible, it gives them time and choices.

Can Your Central Air Conditioning System ... - Home Improvement

News Canada81 2

(NC)-Do you rely on central air conditioning to make the summer?s heat and humidity more bearable? If so, now is the time to ensure that your equipment is in tip-top shape. If you fail to maintain it, your cooling system will suffer a steady decline in performance while your energy use and utility bills will increase.
While there are some maintenance jobs that you can do to prolong the life of your equipment and keep it running at peak efficiency, other jobs are best left to the professionals. Some of the simple things that any homeowner can do include:

Filters should be routinely cleaned or replaced. (some are reusable while others must be replaced).
Ensure that the outdoor condensing unit has adequate airflow by checking that the area around the unit is cleared of debris and that foliage is trimmed back at least two feet.

Other maintenance tasks that are best left to a trained technician are as follows:

The evaporator coil should be checked every year and cleaned as necessary ? dirt reduces airflow and insulates the coil, reducing the cooling ability of your air conditioner.
Outdoor condenser coils can become dirty as well and should be cleaned.
Aluminum coil fins on evaporator and condenser coils outdoor should be checked and, if necessary, straightened to ensure that airflow is not blocked.
Supply and return air ducts should be checked for leaks. A professional service technician can detect and correct duct leaks that could allow cool air to leak out and hot air to leak in, wasting an enormous amount of energy.
Checking to ensure the proper working pressures in the refrigeration circuit. A qualified service technician will have the tools and experience necessary to determine that your cooling system is operating as it should be.

To find a properly qualified cooling contractor, look for the HRAC Member Company Logo ? members of the Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Contractors of Canada (HRAC) have the training and experience that you are looking for. Visit the HRAC website at www.hrac.ca to locate a contractor in your area.

Pope's butler vows to help Vatican scandal probe

FILE - In this March 23, 2012 file photo, Vatican Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone, left, looks on as Pope Benedict XVI talks to journalists during a press conference aboard the flight to Silao, Mexico. An already sordid scandal over leaked Vatican documents took a Hollywood-like turn Saturday, May 26, 2012 with confirmation that the pope's own butler had been arrested after documents he had no business having were found in his Vatican City apartment. The "Vatileaks" scandal has seriously embarrassed the Vatican at a time when it is trying to show the world financial community that it has turned a page and shed its reputation as a scandal plagued tax haven. Bertone, 77, has been blamed for a series of gaffes and management problems that have plagued Benedict's papacy and, according to the leaked documents, generated a not inconsiderable amount of ill will directed at him from other Vatican officials. FILE - In this Monday, April 21, 2008 file photo, Pope Benedict XVI, left, arrives at the Italian air force 31st Squadron base in Ciampino, 30 kilometers (19 miles) southeast of Rome, on his way back from a six-day trip to the U.S. including the U.N. and Ground Zero in New York. The Vatican has confirmed Saturday, May 26, 2012, that the pope's butler Paolo Gabriele, at right carrying bags, was arrested in an embarrassing leaks scandal. Spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said Paolo Gabriele, a layman, was arrested in his home inside Vatican City with secret documents in his possession. This file photo taken Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, shows the building, left, which hosts the Vatican bank, formerly known as the Institute for Religious Operas, I.O.R., inside the Vatican. Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, head of the I.O.R. was ousted after a no-confidence vote of the I.O.R. governing body on Thursday, May 24, 2012. The "Vatileaks" scandal has seriously embarrassed the Vatican at a time during which it is trying to show the world financial community that it has turned a page and shed its reputation as a scandal plagued tax haven. Vatican documents leaked to the press in recent months have undermined that effort, alleging corruption in Vatican finance as well as internal bickering over the Holy See's efforts to show more transparency in its financial operations. But perhaps most critically, the leaks have seemed aimed at one main goal: to discredit Pope Benedict XVI's No. 2, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state. (AP Photo/Domenico Stinellis)

(AP) ? The biggest scandal to rock the Vatican in decades widened Monday with the pope's butler, arrested for allegedly having confidential documents in his home, agreeing to cooperate with investigators ? raising the specter that higher-ranking ecclesial heads may soon roll.

Few believe butler Paolo Gabriele worked alone to leak dozens of documents shedding light on power struggles, corruption and intrigue inside the highest levels of the Catholic Church. The leaks have tormented the Vatican for months and painted a picture of a church hierarchy in utter disarray.

Gabriele, the pope's personal butler since 2006, was arrested Wednesday evening after Holy See documents were found inside his Vatican City apartment, adding an unfathomable Hollywood twist to the already sordid Vatileaks scandal. He remains in custody in a Vatican detention facility, accused of theft, and has met with his wife and lawyers.

Gabriele's lawyer, Carlo Fusco, said Monday that his client was "very serene and calm," despite the whirlwind of speculation surrounding his arrest. He said Gabriele himself had told the Vatican judge investigating the case that he would "respond to all the questions and will collaborate with investigators to ascertain the truth."

Italian media reported Monday that a cardinal is suspected of playing a major role in the scandal. However, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, denied the reports categorically. He said many Vatican officials were being questioned but insisted "there is no cardinal under suspicion."

But Lombardi acknowledged that the investigation continues.

And on Monday, the Italian daily La Repubblica published a rambling interview with what it described as another Vatican "mole," someone who described the various agendas at play behind the leaks.

The unnamed leaker said the aim was to show how weak Pope Benedict XVI is, the fears of his secretary of state, and to make clear that the "fundamental role of the church is to defend the Gospel, not accumulate power and money."

Lombardi dismissed as "pure fantasy" such a rash of unsourced reports about the investigation in the Italian media, which have been on a frenzy ever since reports of Gabriele's detention emerged Friday.

Gabriele, a 46-year-old father of three, was always considered extremely loyal to Benedict and his predecessor, John Paul II, for whom he briefly served. Vatican insiders have said they were baffled by his alleged involvement, and Lombardi said Monday that the entire scandal has caused pain throughout the Vatican.

Benedict, who in March appointed a commission of cardinals to investigate the leaks, was being kept informed of developments and is "aware of the delicate situation that the Roman curia is going through," Lombardi said.

He acknowledged the "negative image" of the Vatican that was emerging from the scandal but said the developments made it ever more important to "reestablish a climate of clarity, truth, transparency and trust as soon as possible."

The Vatileaks scandal broke in January when Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi broadcast letters from the former No. 2 Vatican administrator to the pope in which he begged not to be transferred for having exposed alleged corruption that cost the Holy See millions of euros in higher contract prices. The prelate, Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano, is now the Vatican's U.S. ambassador.

The scandal widened over the following months with documents leaked to Italian journalists that laid bare power struggles inside the Vatican over its efforts to show greater financial transparency and comply with international norms to fight money laundering. There was even a leak of a memo claiming that Benedict would die this year.

The scandal reached a peak last weekend, when Nuzzi published an entire book based on a trove of new documentation, including personal correspondence to and from the pope and his private secretary, much of which paints Benedict's No. 2, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, in a negative light.

Vito Mancuso, an Italian theologian, told reporters at a press launch of the book "His Holiness" that the documents, many of which point to Bertone's involvement in scandals that have afflicted the papacy, all appeared aimed at providing evidence for why he should resign.

"Looking at the documents in succession, it seems like you're seeing a series of bullets aimed at hitting Bertone," Mancuso said.

Bertone, 77, was Benedict's loyal No. 2 at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith before being named secretary of state. With no diplomatic or broad administrative experience coming into the job, he has earned not a few critics inside the Vatican bureaucracy.

The Vatican probe into the leaks is actually working on several tracks: Vatican magistrates are pursuing the criminal investigation, and Gabriele was arrested as part of that. The Vatican secretariat of state is pursuing an administrative probe. And the three cardinals appointed by Benedict are acting in a sort of supervisory role, looking beyond the narrow criminal scope of the leaks to interview broadly across the Vatican bureaucracy, Lombardi said.

They report directly to the pope and can both share information with Vatican prosecutors and receive information from them, Lombardi said.

The group is headed by Cardinal Julian Herranz, an Opus Dei prelate who headed the Vatican's legal office as well as the disciplinary commission of the Vatican bureaucracy before retiring.

Gabriele's arrest occurred almost simultaneously with another stunning development inside the secretive walls of the Vatican: the ouster of Benedict's hand-picked president of the Vatican bank, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, himself close to Opus. The bank's board took a vote of no-confidence last week to oust him for failing to do his job.

Bank board member Carl Anderson told The Associated Press that the ouster had no political undertones and that the board wasn't taking cues from Bertone. He said it was purely a business decision since Gotti Tedeschi had become an obstacle to the bank's efforts to be more transparent in its financial dealings. Gotti Tedeschi hasn't responded to the accusations.

The chaos of the scandal came amid new developments in one of the Vatican's most enduring mysteries, the case of Emanuela Orlandi, the 15-year-old daughter of a Vatican employee who disappeared in 1983 while on her way to a music lesson in Rome.

On Sunday, Orlandi's brother led a march to the Vatican in hope that Benedict would offer them a prayer following the unearthing of the tomb of a mobster alleged to have kidnapped her. The crypt, inside an Opus Dei church in Rome, yielded hundreds of old bone fragments that are being examined for a trace of the girl.

China on the capitalist road

China Daily, the largest English-language newspaper in China, carried a front-page headline last week: "Village Gratitude Shows Integrity of Task."

Not clear what that's about, and the opening sentence isn't much help: "On a hot afternoon, Zhou Yi picked up a bag of freshly boiled eggs that had been left on the doorstep of the committee office in Chaqulak village in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region." I figured this must be some feel-good story about the noble, uncorrupted country folk taking care of the less fortunate in their midst.

But read on. Zhou Yi is not a homeless man dependent on the generosity of his fellow peasants who have little enough for themselves, etc. He is one of a group of "regional-level officials sent to live in Chaqulak as part of an initiative to provide officials with firsthand experience of working at the grass-roots." The officials were grateful for the eggs. Apparently they don't get a per diem.

A program to send bureaucrats into the countryside to see what real work is like? It's possible the story is not so simple, and maybe China Daily has an agenda here. But it sure sounds like what went on during Mao Tse-tung's Cultural Revolution of 1966-76, doesn't it? The founding editor of China Daily himself spent nine years doing menial work on a farm somewhere before he was allowed to return to Beijing.

I thought that stuff didn't happen anymore. In 1979, just three years after the Cultural Revolution collapsed, Deng Xiaoping reversed course and China started down the capitalist road, with stunning results that any visitor can see: small towns converted into huge cities with millions of people living in high-rises, driving cars (or taking new subways); choking on pollution but nevertheless happy to be enjoying the fruits of a free-market economy.

And yet the Communist Party retains absolute political power (although there are now real elections at the village level, with multiple candidates and all the fixin's). In fact, the party takes credit for reforming the economy, and may even deserve it.

So how does all this fit together? How free is the average Chinese citizen? How much communism is left in the Communist Party? Will free-market capitalism inevitably lead to democracy? Or have the Chinese discovered some new Confucian synthesis of free markets and authoritarian rule?

These are the kind of questions that an American visitor to China will naturally have. And after eight days there (in a small group of journalists whose way was paid by a foundation funded by a Hong Kong billionaire), I now have all the answers.

Actually, whatever insights I may have gained during my visit came mostly from reading James Fallows' new book, "China Airborne," on the plane coming home. Fallows spent several years in China with the explicit and full-time purpose of trying to understand it. He writes that to talk about China (population 1.3 billion) as a single entity is absurd:

"When acting on the international stage, or when imposing some internal political rules, the central government can operate as a coordinated entity. But most of the time, visitors ? and Chinese people too ? see vividly and exclusively the little patch of 'China' that is in front of them, with only a guess as to how representative it might be of happenings anywhere else."

Fortunately, while Fallows was learning about China firsthand, I was in Washington taking an advanced course in guesswork at the National Punditry Institute. So here is my best guess about China: More than two decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it's pretty well established that freedom and democracy really are universal appetites. Everybody wants them, with no special exemption for Asian cultures.

But would you give up your right to vote in exchange for a job in the city, indoor plumbing, a TV? That's what many Chinese people believe their country is doing: moving slowly in introducing democracy in order not to interfere with the mad dash to capitalism.

The Chinese are still ruled by a regime that killed millions in defense of a philosophy it no longer believes in. But now it rules with a lighter, and somewhat whimsical touch.

An older dissident type told us that young adults didn't even know about the events 23 years ago in Tiananmen Square. We asked a bunch of college students. They giggled and snorted: Of course they knew about Tiananmen Square. Would they write about it in the school paper? More snorting: Of course not. They seemed perfectly comfortable with the anomaly, maybe because they think it won't last.

Even more comfortable was a huge manufacturing firm that had set up a series of inspirational posters near the front door. Most of them were filled with business school babble about corporate culture. In this environment, one poster about the important role of the Communist Party stood out. And in fact the party had supplied funds to get this company started. In every other respect, it seemed like a big company anywhere in the capitalist world. (And I was there for more than 45 minutes, listening to a discussion in a foreign language, so I know.)

The best-known bit of totalitarian-style repression in China is the notorious "one child" policy. It is still the rule, but it is enforced somewhat sporadically. If you are an only child of your parents, you yourself may have more than one. Some people who can afford it just pay the fine as a cost of having children. And meanwhile China faces a shortage of working-age people to support a growing number of old folks. So even putting ethical issues aside, the whole thing looks like a mistake. It won't last.

Yes, the Chinese Communist Party continues to do terrible things, as the case of Chen Guangcheng demonstrates. But the party also seems to function as sort of a Rotary Club that you join if you want to get ahead in China's raucous, utterly non-communist economy.

Justin Bieber Accused of Battery Against Paparazzi Member

Justin Bieber has been accused of battery against a celebrity gossip photographer. But questions have already risen over the legitimacy of this allegation.

Justin Bieber in California

Here is what the paparazzi member claims in a police report: he tried to take Justin's picture around noon yesterday outside a mall in Calabasas called The Commons.

Bieber, who was accompanied by Selena Gomez, reacted in anger, some kind of physical confrontation took place and the photographer was taken to the hospital after complaining of upper torso pain.

Here is what actually went down according to witnesses who spoke to TMZ: The photographer was blocking Bieber's car; the singer asked him to move; and a scuffle did ensue when the "journalist" refused to do so.

But an attorney then approached the photographer and explained how he could get a lot of money if he called and ambulance and pressed charges.

No word yet from anyone in Justin's camp, while authorities are hoping to speak to Bieber and Gomez some time this week.

I find "Impress Yourself" to be one of the better motivational quotes I have heard and wanted to have it somewhere highly visible in my everyday life. I thought the best place to put this motto was on my computer monitor as a screen saver. With this creative idea I would be seeing the motivational quote "Impress Yourself" floating across my computer monitor many times over the day. My plan was that this visual aid would remind me of my previous goal setting activities, so I could refocus my efforts and move forward.

While I found the screen saver to be a powerful technique, this next idea I found to be even more so! I went to Bob Proctor's weekend seminar "Create Your Own Economy" in May 2009. Both Bob Proctor and Gerry Robert were at this seminar. I find these two entrepreneurs to be great educators and feel inspired and motivated by what they have to say. Fortunately, I was able to obtain a picture of myself with each of these men at this conference. I planned to use these pictures as one of my desktop themes. I knew seeing these pictures on a daily basis would help me in the area of self improvement and motivation.

This presented me with a dilemma. Up to this point, I had been rotating the desktop wallpaper picture on my computer screen on a semi regular basis, generally using my children individually or together at different events or phases of their lives. As I did not think my children would appreciate being displaced from my monitor, I decided to create a simple photo collage of my children and educators.

In my first attempt to produce my own free desktop wallpaper featuring my children and educators, I used Microsoft Word. I added the pictures to one page of a Word document and then added the motivational quote "Impress Yourself". I copied and saved the file in Paint as a .jpg and used it as my computer wallpaper. This simple picture collage inspired me on a daily basis as I saw it every time I was working on the computer.

Around the same time as I was working on my simple Word collage, my nine year old daughter was making a massive photo collage using PowerPoint. She was pasting numerous pictures onto the same slide and overlapping them. As I watched her create her masterpiece, my mind raced to create one of my own. It became immediately apparent that creating a picture collage in PowerPoint was much faster and easier than using Word. You can easily drag pictures around the slide, arrange their layout as you wish and overlap the pictures.

For my first large picture collage, I added about 75 pictures to a standard PowerPoint slide, but I soon learned that unless your computer monitor is the same length and width as a standard piece of paper the photo collage will be skewed. I changed the size of my PowerPoint slide to match the exact size of my computer monitor screen, added more pictures, a couple of motivational quotes and saved this picture collage as one of my desktop backgrounds.

For a standard 19" LCD computer monitor, which has a viewing area of around 180 square inches, I estimate you could be looking at between 75 to 150 pictures instead of just one. My largest picture is about nine square inches while my smallest is about one square inch. You may think that a small picture one square inch in size is too small but I find that this is all you need to prompt yourself. For example, I have a small 1 inch square picture of a multi family house on my picture collage. As soon as I look at this picture, I immediately see and visualize a house I would like to build for low income earners. The rooms are small but it is a home which people can afford and with ownership hopefully comes the building of self esteem. While you may not totally be able to pick out the details in the photo, the purpose of the picture is to trigger your mind to remember your goals. I find pictures of this size address this concept very well.

I find that there are two major advantages of including your goals in your computer desktop wallpaper. First, all of your past accomplishments and future goals are right in front of you on a daily basis. Seeing what you have already accomplished assures you that you are capable of creating more for yourself. Second, the time required to review your goals in picture format is quite quick. For instance, I have a dream book which contains what I want to accomplish in the future. However, as I am generally under time constraints, I rarely look at my dream book. Yet everyday I am reminded of my goals when I am working on my computer through my computer wallpaper photo collage. In essence, my computer desktop wallpaper has become my vision board as well as my dream book.

Personal growth educators generally want you to review your goals as much as possible. By using this photo collage technique, I have my whole dream book and vision board in front of me every day. I think this is a great goal setting tip and a good self improvement and motivation technique. This simple idea is not only easy to implement but fun to put together. Additionally, it very quickly reminds me of my goals on a daily basis. This gentle reminder tends to stop me from doing things which do not advance me and focus me on what needs to get done to achieve my personal goals.

Warning signs for Obama on path to electoral votes

President Barack Obama faces new warning signs in a once-promising Southern state and typically Democratic-voting Midwestern states roughly five months before the election even as he benefits nationally from encouraging economic news.

Obama's new worries about North Carolina and Wisconsin offer opportunities for Republican Mitt Romney, who must peel off states Obama won in 2008 if he's to cobble together the 270 electoral votes needed to oust the incumbent in November.

Iowa, which kicked off the campaign in January, is now expected to be tight to the finish, while New Mexico, thought early to be pivotal, seems to be drifting into Democratic territory.

If the election were today, Obama would likely win 247 electoral votes to Romney's 206, according to an Associated Press analysis of polls, ad spending and key developments in states, along with interviews with more than a dozen Republican and Democratic strategists both inside and outside of the two campaigns.

Seven states, offering a combined 85 electoral votes, are viewed as too close to give either candidate a meaningful advantage: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio and Virginia.

"As of today, the advantage still lies with the president, but there is a long and hard road ahead in this election," said Tad Devine, who was a top strategist to Democratic presidential candidates Al Gore and John Kerry but isn't directly involved in this year's race.

If Romney wins all the states Republican John McCain carried in 2008 plus North Carolina, as trends today suggest he would, he would still need 64 electoral votes to hit the magic number. That would require him to win a majority of the states that are up for grabs.

Obama, on the other hand, faces the costly and labor-intensive challenge of defending those states in a much different environment than the one he enjoyed four years ago.

Big-spending, pro-Romney political committees are certain to be a factor, and already are running heavy levels of television ads in states where Obama is vulnerable, such as Florida.

But Obama's early spending ? more than $30 million on advertising before Memorial Day ? and new glimmers of economic hope across the battleground states demonstrate the size of Romney's challenge.

The race is expected to be close, and the past six weeks have been volatile.

North Carolina is a case in point.

Obama announced his support for gay marriage on May 9, one day after 60 percent of North Carolina voters approved a constitutional ban. "That issue definitely hurts him down there," said veteran Republican presidential campaign strategist Charlie Black, a top aide to 2008 nominee McCain. Black's not directly involved in this year's race but is an informal adviser to Romney.

North Carolina's high African American and young voter population, keys to Obama's 2008 wins there, give him the edge, aides say. And the president so far has spent heavily there, $2.7 million on television, according to reports provided to the AP.

But Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue gave Republicans an opening by not seeking re-election this year. And union leaders, a key Democratic constituency, are upset that this summer's Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., is being held in a state where union rights are weak.

In Wisconsin, embattled Republican Gov. Scott Walker's improving fortunes as a contentious June 5 recall election approaches could alter that state's landscape. Walker, who sparked mass protests by signing anti-union legislation last year, has pulled narrowly ahead of Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett in recent polls.

If Walker survives, Romney aides say they have a real chance to carry Wisconsin, which no Republican has done since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

"I don't think there's been any better dress rehearsal for a presidential election than what's going on in Wisconsin right now," said Rich Beeson, political director for the former Massachusetts governor.

Indeed, the Wisconsin recall could signal a GOP shift in an arc of states from Iowa to Pennsylvania that have reliably voted Democratic in presidential elections for a generation.

"Whether Walker wins or doesn't is going to be a big indicator of how Wisconsin goes, and how the whole upper Midwest goes," said Iowa's Republican Gov. Terry Branstad.

Romney has signaled plans to contest Iowa, where Obama's 2008 caucus win propelled him to the Democratic nomination. Romney also sees opportunity in his native Michigan, where Democratic presidential candidates have won since 1988.

Bright spots are developing for Obama, too.

Public polls this month showed the president narrowly ahead in Virginia, a Southern state Republicans had carried nine times before Obama won it in 2008. Obama's advantage among Latino voters is moving New Mexico his way. Neither campaign nor the super PACs have advertised there, despite close finishes in 2000 and 2004.

Obama also has seized on new economic data that could give him a lift across the contested map. April unemployment ticked downward in all of the up-for-grabs states except Colorado as Obama and Romney have fought over who is best equipped to lead an economic recovery.

In Des Moines, Iowa, this month, Romney blamed Obama's spending for the recovery's slow pace. A week later, on the other side of town, Obama said Romney's career as a private equity executive was more suited for the boardroom than the Oval Office.

Obama's attack dovetails with scathing ads on Romney's career at the head of Bain Capital, which ran briefly in Colorado, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Virginia. They remained on the air last week in Ohio, where Obama aides say Romney's opposition to the auto industry bailout in 2009 hurts him with workers in the region's auto manufacturing sector.

Obama has had an edge in getting out his message. For nearly two months, his campaign has aired spots across 11 states, heaviest in Florida, Iowa, Ohio and Virginia, according to the ad-tracking reports.

Romney has only been airing ads for two weeks in four states. But super PACs that support him have helped shave Obama's advertising edge, airing $10 million in ads across 10 states.

Obama aides point to an edge in state-by-state organizing that could be the deciding factor in a close election. While Romney is quickly arranging with the Republican National Committee to deploy staff to various battlegrounds, Obama's campaign has been up and running for years.

Said Democratic strategist Devine: "The president and his campaign have a real and potentially decisive advantage on the ground."

Rainy Memorial Day forecast for southeast coast

This NOAA satellite image taken Saturday, May 26, 2012 at 1:45 a.m. EDT shows shows clouds off the Carolina Coast associated with Subtropical Storm Beryl. The storm is expected to move slowly southwestward over the next few days, eventually making landfall as a tropical storm along the northeast coast of Florida. This region is currently in an exceptional drought, so the rain from Beryl may turn out to be partially a good thing. For more information, please see http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/. (AP) ? A cluster of thunderstorms that is expected to become Tropical Storm Beryl could make for a sloppy Memorial Day in the southeast.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect Saturday from northern Florida to South Carolina.

Beryl was technically still considered a "subtropical storm," but the system is expected to bring winds and rain to the area regardless of its official classification.

Tropical storm conditions ? meaning maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72 kph) ? could reach the coast as early as Saturday night. Some coastal flooding is forecast, as the rain could cause high tides.

Late Saturday morning, Beryl was centered about 230 miles east-southeast of Charleston, S.C.

The southeastern coast is popular with tourists who visit to enjoy the beaches and wilderness areas.

Wacky! Human-powered, kinetic craft hit the road

Tina Kerrigan Photography

"Time Machine," built and operated by the Tempus Fugitives team, was last year's Grand Champion in the Kinetic Grand Championship in Humboldt County, Calif.

By Rob Lovitt, msnbc.com contributor

As millions of Americans prepare to hit the road this holiday weekend, some intrepid souls are taking a decidedly different tack. From Arcata, Calif., to Key West, Fla., they?re building unique vehicles, racing them over hill and dale (and bay) and celebrating the joy of human-powered travel.

Along the way, those celebrations may earn the highly coveted honor of being named Overhead Bin?s Weird Festival of the Month for May.

Consider, for example, the Kinetic Grand Championship in Humboldt County, Calif. Now in its 44th year, the three-day ?Triathlon of the Art World? (May 26?28) invites teams to build human-powered ?kinetic sculptures? and race them over 42 miles of roads, beaches and the waters of Humboldt Bay.

?We?re a unique little pocket of the world,? said Emma Breacain of Kinetic Universe, which organizes the event. ?We have a lot of tolerance for quirks.?

According to Breacain, the quirk in question ? transforming old bicycles and other ?junk? into moveable works of art and racing them ? dates back to 1969 when Hobart Brown, a local artist and gallery owner, added two wheels and other repurposed materials to his son?s tricycle and called it a ?pentacycle.?

A friend challenged him to a race; several others took up the challenge with their own ?kinetic kontraptions,? and a tradition was born. Expanded over the years, the event now runs from Arcata to Eureka to Ferndale and requires teams to transform their crafts mid-race as they traverse roads, sand dunes and various bodies of water.

?I can?t tell you how many iPods there must be on the bottom of Humboldt Bay,? said Breacain. Presumably, the owners of those music players were contenders for several awards, including best flip and biggest splash, but also-rans for others, such as fastest and best engineering.

The festivities, which draw approximately 50 teams and 5,000 to 10,000 spectators, have proven so popular that they?ve spawned similar events across the country. Earlier this month, Baltimore and Philadelphia held their own kinetic sculpture races, with upcoming events scheduled in Corvallis and Klamath Falls, Ore., in July.

In the meantime, a different sort of creative competition ? or is that competitive creativity? ? will be on display this weekend across the continent in Key West, Fla. On Sunday, May 27, intrepid boatbuilder/sailors will take to the waters of Key West Bight in the 21st Annual Schooner Wharf Minimal Regatta.

How minimal? The materials entrants can use to build their boats, including paddles, are limited to one sheet of 4? x 8? plywood, two eight-foot 2 x 4s, one pound of fasteners and a roll of duct tape. No caulk or adhesive is allowed although painting of the hull ? the bolder, the better ? is encouraged.

According to Evalena Worthington, co-owner of regatta-sponsor Schooner Wharf Bar, boats compete in one of two categories: canoe/kayaks built for speed and ?open design? models that open the door to all manner of watercraft with wild paint jobs and names we can?t print here.

The event typically draws 40 to 45 entrants and as many as 3,000 spectators, with prizes awarded for speed, design, costumes, sportsmanship and the crowd-pleasing Sinker Award. ?There?s a lot of competition for that one,? said Worthington.

Subpar seamanship aside, the event also has a more serious side, with the proceeds from this year?s entry fees helping support a ?Wounded Warrior? cruise for injured veterans sponsored the 46th Special Forces Company Association.

?Entrants get T-shirts and beer and they get to feel good about the money going to a good cause,? said Worthington. ?It?s Memorial Day weekend so it?s especially fitting.?

J.Crew proves the enduring power of the catalog

Spencer Platt / Getty Images

Sure, J.Crew wants to get you in the store, but catalog and online sales are just as important to the retailer.

By Michelle Fox, CNBC Producer

Online spending may be increasing, but the venerable catalog is doing anything but fading away. In fact, it is still an important part of business for retailers.

?It?s basically a marketing tool,? said retail analyst Eric Beder, a managing director at Brean Murray, Carret & Co. ?The beauty of a catalog is that you don?t have to go online to see it, so you can use it anywhere.?

More than 12.5 billion catalogs were mailed out to homes in the U.S. last year, according to the Direct Marketing Association, the largest global association for the marketing community.? And there are still those who use the catalog for what it was originally intended for: More than 89.6 million Americans bought an item from a catalog last year .

CNBC: Power brokers?of?the fashion industry

But these days it is more than just a means to allow customers to order merchandise from the privacy of their homes. Retailers are relying on it to draw in business and spread their brand?s name.

J.Crew, which began as a mail-order business, now has over 300 stores across the U.S. and Canada but it still mails out 40 million catalogs per year.

Because of the marketing punch they pack, J.Crew CEO Mickey Drexler, goes over every issue with a fine-tooth comb before it's published.

CNBC: Steve Jobs and Mickey Drexler, a tale of two retailers
??
?I?m looking at the color; I?m looking at the clarity of a picture, the newness, the creativity,? Drexler said.

Roughly 30 percent of J.Crew's revenue comes from online and catalog sales ? the two are tightly intertwined.

?Most of our business goes from catalog to online,? Drexler said. ?I?m always looking at the turn-on item or category or outfit that will drive them to want to shop at J.Crew instead of the millions of choices out there.?

CNBC: J.Crew & The Man Who Dressed America

A couple of years ago, some retailers decided to cut back on publishing catalogs in order to save money. That move proved to be a hard lesson in the power of the catalog, said Ken Ebeling, senior vice president of membership at the Direct Marketing Association.

?Sales plummeted,? he said. ?They realized if they don?t keep their catalogs out there, their e-commerce will decline.?

In fact, some businesses that have never published catalogs before have decided now they want in.

CNBC: Power dressing for success
?
Apparel retailer Express ?has always done direct mail, but about a year and a half ago decided to publish catalogs. It not only shows up in mailboxes, but on different channels like Facebook as well.

?Our twenty-something customer makes little delineation between channels.? She or he enjoys viewing our catalogue online, in her mailbox or on his phone, so we make sure our fashion is always available no matter where our customers want to view it,? Express CMO Lisa Gavales said. ?That said, we haven?t seen any virtual viewing work as well as a good, old fashioned paper catalog.?

New York and Company, another fashion retailer, refers to its new catalog as a ?fashion book.? Titled ?The City,? it not only highlights the company?s products, it also includes nuggets of information about New York. The first edition was published in March of this year, and the second edition came out in May.

CNBC: America?s best-dressed CEOs

?Our assortments are right, our brand is right. We wanted to get out there and express our brand in a way that we never really have before,? New York and Company spokesperson Suzanne Rosenberg said. ?We?ve had a good reaction, both online and in stores.?

Beder believes companies can become more focused within the catalogs and can tailor them for specific events or a certain customer base.

?I think that the trend is going to continue,? he said. ?If anything, we?ve seen more people add catalogs than drop them.?

?J.Crew & The Man Who Dressed America? premieres Thursday, May 24 at 10 p.m. ET, with a re-air at 1 a.m. ET. Below, CNBC's David Faber shares a preview of the program.

CloudFlare To Launch Service For Sites Dealing With Tortuous EU Cookie Law

3213621460_d00c0c142c_mThe European "Directive on Privacy and Electronic Communications" that regulates the ways websites can track users, is coming to sites which serve European users, which covers plenty out there. The Directive requires that sites disclose the use of cookies on their site and allows visitors to opt-in to their use. It could be an immediate turn-off for users, but it's here to stay. On Saturday, May 26, the UK implements the first phase of the law, so website owners are scrambling to ensure they are in compliance (assuming they even know about it). As we've said before, we think it's dumb and will make it much harder on European startups. The first requirement of the UK law is that sites do an audit to determine what cookies are used on their site. The Directive asks them to identify two types of cookies: those it deems "strictly necessary" and those that are not. The problem is that most sites have no idea what cookies it might be serving to users. However, US-startup CloudFlare is about to launch a service which will tell site what cookies they are serving and a way to control them: CloudFlare Audit + Control.
