Obama schedules news conference at the White House

BERLIN, April 29 (Reuters) - Barcelona will try every trick in the book to overturn a 4-0 first-leg deficit against Bayern Munich in their Champions League semi-final return leg on Wednesday, honorary Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer warned on Monday. Bayern crushed the Spaniards last week in a surprisingly one-sided encounter but Beckenbauer, former player, coach and president of Germany's most successful club, warned that Barcelona were not ready to surrender. "Barca will try everything to throw Bayern off balance," he told Bild newspaper. ...

Daily Rituals

One evening in 1930, as he was struggling to recapture the feverish spirit that had fueled his first novel, Look Homeward, Angel, Thomas Wolfe decided to give up on an uninspired hour of work and get undressed for bed. But, standing naked at his hotel room window, Wolfe found that his weariness had suddenly evaporated and that he was eager to write again. Returning to the table, he wrote until dawn with, he recalled, ?amazing speed, ease, and sureness.?

Looking back, Wolfe tried to figure out what had prompted the sudden change?and realized that, at the window, he had been unconsciously fondling his genitals, a habit from childhood that, while not exactly sexual (his ?penis remained limp and unaroused,? he noted in a letter to his editor), fostered such a ?good male feeling? that it had stoked his creative energies. From then on, Wolfe regularly used this method to inspire his writing sessions, dreamily exploring his ?male configurations? until ?the sensuous elements in every domain of life became more immediate, real, and beautiful.?

Wolfe wasn?t the only novelist to stick his hand down his pants while working?or to overshare about this habit with others. Flaubert renounced masturbation in 1844, when he was 22, but apparently the ban didn?t last long. Four years later, while struggling with the novel The Temptation of Saint Anthony, Flaubert wrote to a close friend, ?There are moments when my head bursts with the bloody pains I?m taking over this. Out of sheer frustration I jerked off yesterday, feeling the same bleakness that drove me to masturbate at school, when I sat in detention.? If Flaubert was driven to masturbation by boredom and despair, Balzac used it to further intensify his coffee-fueled writing binges. According to a 2010 Harper?s article (subscription required), the novelist would ?masturbate to the very edge of orgasm, but not over, and that state?agitated, excited to the point of near madness?was Balzac's sweet spot, in terms of composing. ?

Balzac also didn?t let himself go beyond this ?sweet spot? because he thought that each orgasm depleted his creative energy (a sentiment memorably paraphrased by Woody Allen?s Alvy Singer in Annie Hall). D.H. Lawrence agreed with this notion, at least when it came to self-gratification. He wrote, ?In masturbation there is nothing but loss. There is no reciprocity. There is merely the spending away of a certain force, and no return. The body remains, in a sense, a corpse, after the act of self-abuse. There is no change, only deadening. ?

Other writers took the exact opposite point of view. John Cheever, for instance, placed a high value on the salutary effects of erotic release. He thought that his constitution required at least ?two or three orgasms a week,? and he believed that sexual stimulation improved his concentration and even his eyesight: ?With a stiff prick I can read the small print in prayer books but with a limp prick I can barely read newspaper headlines.?

The Belgian novelist Georges Simenon needed much more than two or three orgasms a week. His astonishing literary productivity?he published more than 400 books in his career?was matched, or even surpassed, by his sexual appetite. ?Most people work every day and enjoy sex periodically,? Patrick Marnham writes. ?Simenon had sex every day and every few months indulged in a frenzied orgy of work.? When living in Paris, Simenon frequently slept with four different women in the same day. He estimated that he bedded 10,000 women in his life. (His second wife disagreed, putting the total closer to 1,200.)

Simenon explained his sexual hunger as the result of ?extreme curiosity? about the opposite sex, and said that these dalliances actually had a concrete benefit on his fiction: ?Women have always been exceptional people for me whom I have vainly tried to understand. It has been a lifelong, ceaseless quest. And how could I have created dozens, perhaps hundreds, of female characters in my novels if I had not experienced those adventures which lasted for two hours or ten minutes??

And what about female artists? Earlier in this series, I mentioned that George Sand used to slip out a sleeping lover?s bed to write in the middle of the night, but that is a pretty tenuous (and tame) example. My Daily Rituals research did not turn up many female artists who drew an explicit connection between their sex lives and their working habits?although whether this is because the connection isn?t there, or because women just aren?t as boastful about their erotic activities, is anyone?s guess.

Ria Park Hotel ? 5* Accommodation With Golf To ... - Your Golf Travel

With over 300 days of sunshine a year the Algarve makes the ideal destination for a golf holiday any time of the year. And one our favourite places to stay is the Ria Park Hotel & Spa, this 5* hotel is the perfect place for a golf break in the Southern Portugal as it has access to the famous golf courses on the Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo estates.

Ria Park Hotel is nestled in an area of superb natural beauty ? encircled by tropical gardens, waterfalls, palm trees, a dense pine forest just a couple of hundred yards from a gorgeous sandy beach! All of this and its only a 20 minute drive from Faro International Airport, and a couple of hours drive from both Lisbon and Seville. It could not be positioned better for UK golfers looking for bit of 5* golf in the sun.

ria-park-bedroom

Every room has a balcony or a terrace with beautiful views overlooking the gardens, the swimming pool or the azure Atlantic Ocean.

The hotel itself manages to perfectly combine a laid back and relaxing atmosphere with the opulence of a true 5* hotel. It is able to boast a total of 175 guestrooms, nine of which are luxury suites. All are furnished to the highest of standards and provide guests with a balcony or terrace which overlooks the the gorgeous Ria Formosa Natural Park, the hotel?s private gardens or the spectacular Atlantic Ocean. The spacious rooms are inspired by Mediterranean characteristics that define the rest of the resort. All are well equipped with direct dial telephone, minibar and electronic safe.

Hotels with superb dining and drinking options are something that Portuguese hotels are renowned for, and Ria Park is certainly no exception. Whether you?re looking for distinctive regional specialities or refined international cuisine there is sure to be something to suite your mood or appetite.? The two distinctive dining options at the hotel are Flamingo and Lusitano ? both offer wide ranging menus and even allow you to enjoy your meals on refreshing al fresco terraces which provide great panoramas of the majestic ocean and Ria Formosa Natural Park.

The two superb restaurants are enhanced by the three separate beverage outlets: the Cocktail Bar, Lobby Bar and Pool Bar. Often popular throughout the day, these bars offer the perfect place to relax and unwind after a long day on the golf course, with either a refreshing cocktail or a delicious freshly squeezed fruit juice.

ria-park-beach

There is also a complementary shuttle service all year round to take you to and from the Garr?o beach.

World-class accommodation and gastronomic delights are not all that the hotel has to offer, it is also boasts superb leisure facilities which include the brilliant Spa. Here you will find a heated indoor pool with massage jets, a Turkish bath and (male and female) saunas, a fully equipped gymnasium, in addition to 12 massage rooms. Not only this but the Ria Park is within touching distance of the magnificent Garr?o beach (just 800 metres from the hotel). The beach itself is one of the most exclusive in the Algarve, and as a guest in the hotel you will have access to towels, sun loungers and beach umbrellas as part of the package.

Now, obviously, to be recognised as a world class golfing destination the hotel will need to be located within close proximity to some excellent golfing facilities. The Ria Park Hotel is certainly no exception! In choosing Ria Park as the base for your Algarve golf break you will have access to the world-famous golf courses at Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago!

There are three unique courses at Quinta do Lago and two at Vale do Lobo, so you?ll definitely be spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding which one to play first!

The dream of entrepreneur Andre Jordan in the 1970s, Quinta do Lago is now synonymous with the game of golf in Portugal, having been honoured with numerous prestigious professional and amateur events since its opening. It has three championship courses: the South Course, North Course and the recently opened Laranjal Course. ?Manor estate by the lake? (to which Quinta do Lago roughly translates) spans some 2,000 acres and is well and truly established as one of Portugal?s greats.

quinta-do-lago

Quinta do Lago?s South Course is one of the most famous in the Algarve ? it has hosted the Portuguese Open a total of eight times!

Vale do Lobo, on the other hand, is similar to Quinta do Lago in the fact that it is one of the most well-known and well-established golf resorts in the Algarve. Founded in 1962, it is currently the largest luxury resort in Portugal. It has seen much change since Sir Henry Cotton laid out the first course at Vale do Lobo. His original layout has been split in half to form two new courses: the Royal and the Ocean. Undoubtedly the star of Quinta do Lago is the par-3 16th on the Royal Course.

vale-do-lobo

This cliff top signature hole stretches to 224 yards from the back tees and is arguably the most photographed hole in Portuguese golf ? to play this hole alone makes it worth the trip to the Algarve.

Fire official: 2 trapped N.C. children likely dead

DENVER, N.C. (AP) ? Two young children trapped when dirt fell on them at a home construction site Sunday were not expected to be found alive and crews expected to work through the night to recover their bodies, a fire official said.

A father of one of the children called 911 at about 6 p.m. to report what happened, said Lincoln County Emergency Services public information officer Dion Burleson. Crews were on the scene in minutes, but couldn't get to the 7-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl, Burleson said.

Crews used shovels and climbing gear trying to get to the children at the Denver neighborhood. Emergency personnel from several places, including nearby Charlotte, were on the scene late Sunday.

Video from WSOC-TV shows backhoes scooping dirt from a deep hole surrounded by dirt. Equipment surrounded the hole. Burleson said it is hard to estimate how far down the children might be.

The man who called was the father of at least one of the children, Burleson said. Neighbors told WBTV that the children were cousins.

This is "devastating for both the family members and responders who are on the scene," Burleson said. "This is a tragic night in Denver."

Suicide bomber kills 20 at political rally in Iraq

(AP) ? A suicide bomber blew himself up Saturday at a lunch hosted by a Sunni candidate in Iraq's upcoming regional elections, killing 20 people, officials said.

The blast ripped through a hospitality tent pitched next to the house of Muthana al-Jourani, who is running for the provincial council and held the lunch rally for supporters, councilman Sadiq al-Huseini said.

The attack took place in Baqouba, a mixed Sunni-Shiite city some 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad. Insurgent attacks and sectarian bloodletting have been rampant there in the decade since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. Violence is expected to surge in the run up to Iraq's provincial elections on April 20.

A health official and police officer who provided details about the attack spoke anonymously because they weren't authorized to speak to media.

The police officer said al-Jourani, who was injured in the attack, had not requested any extra security for the political event.

In the city's morgue, at least 10 bodies lay strewn on the ground, draped in black plastic sheets. Emergency crews treated the wounded. At the site of the bombing, white plastic chairs were overturned and men, apparently in shock, stood dazed in blood-stained clothing.

Eyewitness Ahmad al-Hadlouj, a 34-year-old who was wounded in the blast, said hundreds of people had gathered in the side street for the rally. His father, a member of the candidate's political bloc, was also wounded.

"This is our blood (shed) for the people," said al-Hadlouj. "We will still participate in elections."

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the police officer said the attack was the hallmark of al-Qaida militants who have used suicide bombers, car bombings and coordinated attacks to try to destabilize the country and undermine confidence in the Shiite-led government. Hard-line Sunni extremists see Shiites and those who work with them as heretics.

A wave of deadly bombings and attacks in March prompted Iraqi officials to conclude that al-Qaida's Iraqi branch, known as the Islamic State of Iraq, has been getting stronger. They say rising lawlessness on the Syria-Iraq frontier and cross-border cooperation with the Syrian militant group Nusra Front has improved the militants' supply of weapons and foreign fighters.

Video: Puzzle of how spiral galaxies set their arms comes into focus

Wednesday, April 3, 2013

As the shapes of galaxies go, the spiral disk ? with its characteristic pinwheel profile ? is by far the most pedestrian.

Our own Milky Way, astronomers believe, is a spiral. Our solar system and Earth reside somewhere near one of its filamentous, swept-back arms. And nearly 70 percent of the galaxies closest to the Milky Way are spirals, suggesting they have taken the most ordinary of galactic forms in a universe with billions of galaxies.

But despite their common morphology, how galaxies like ours get and maintain their characteristic arms has proved to be an enduring puzzle in astrophysics. How do the arms of spiral galaxies arise? Do they change or come and go over time?

The answers to these and other questions are now coming into focus as researchers capitalize on powerful new computer simulations to follow the motions of as many as 100 million "stellar particles" as gravity and other astrophysical forces sculpt them into familiar galactic shapes. Writing April 1 in the Astrophysical Journal, a team of researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics report simulations that seem to resolve longstanding questions about the origin and life history of spiral arms in disk galaxies.

"We show for the first time that stellar spiral arms are not transient features, as claimed for several decades," says UW-Madison astrophysicist Elena D'Onghia, who led the new research along with Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics colleagues Mark Vogelsberger and Lars Hernquist. "They are self-perpetuating, persistent and surprisingly long lived."

The origin and fate of the emblematic spiral arms in disk galaxies have been debated by astrophysicists for decades, with two theories predominating: One holds that the arms come and go over time. A second and widely held theory is that the material that makes up the arms ? stars, gas and dust ? is affected by differences in gravity and jams up, like cars at rush hour, sustaining the arms for long periods.

The new results fall somewhere in between the two theories and suggest that the arms arise in the first place as a result of the influence of giant molecular clouds, star forming regions or nurseries common in galaxies. Introduced into the simulation, the clouds, says D'Onghia, a UW-Madison professor of astronomy, act as "perturbers" and are enough to not only initiate the formation of spiral arms but to sustain them indefinitely.

"We find they are forming spiral arms," explains D'Onghia. "Past theory held the arms would go away with the perturbations removed, but we see that (once formed) the arms self-perpetuate, even when the perturbations are removed. It proves that once the arms are generated through these clouds, they can exist on their own through (the influence of) gravity, even in the extreme when the perturbations are no longer there."

The new study modeled stand-alone disk galaxies, those not influenced by another nearby galaxy or object. Some recent studies have explored the likelihood that spiral galaxies with a close neighbor ? a nearby dwarf galaxy, for example ? get their arms as gravity from the satellite galaxy pulls on the disk of its neighbor.

According to Vogelsberger and Hernquist, the new simulations can be used to reinterpret observational data, looking at both the high-density molecular clouds as well as gravitationally induced holes in space as the mechanisms that drive the formation of the characteristic arms of spiral galaxies.

'Dangerous' inmates escape Texas jail

Texas authorities are using helicopters and dogs to search for two "dangerous" Texas inmates who escaped from jail this morning by squeezing through a gate, leaving behind their black and white prison suits on the railroad tracks behind the jail.

Authorities believe Brian Tucker, 44, and John King, 39, escaped from Hopkins County Jail in Sulphur Springs, Texas, at around 8:30 a.m. today. The jail has approximately 80 inmates who are held there while they await trial.

"Both are considered dangerous," Deputy Alvin Jordan of the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office told ABCNews.com.

Area schools are on lockdown and businesses are on high alert, according to police.

Tucker was awaiting trial in jail for capital murder charges and King had been indicted for evading arrest.

"They were put out on rec yard to have outside rec and undoubtedly squeezed through the gate and took off," Jordan said. "We did find their black and whites about 100 yards behind the facility."

The recreation yard is an open space with a high fence and Hopkins County Sheriff Butch Adams said someone was supposed to be watching the inmates.

Tucker and King were both segregated from other inmates because of the types of crimes they have committed, according to Jordan.

Search dogs tracked their scents northeast, Adams said at a news conference.

"Right now, we don't know if they split up or if they're still together," Adams said. "We found their uniforms when they discarded them on the road behind us and the dogs tracking them and we found footprints."

It is unknown what the men are wearing or whether they may have used some kind of transportation after leaving the jail yard, Jordan said.

Asked if there is any reason to believe they could be armed, Jordan said, "At this point, unless they picked up anything from here to where they're at, the weapons part is unknown."

Their only known connection at this time is that they were inmates at the same time in the same jail with no known previous ties.

"We've still got a perimeter up and hopefully we'll find the," Adams told ABC News. "I've got a lot of good people and volunteers that have come in from other counties."

Authorities are warning people to be careful and call 911 if they see the men.

"If they're spotted, make sure they lock their doors, call 911 and tell us what area they're in," Jordan said. "Don't try to let them approach you."

Tucker is 5-foot-7-inches and about 170 pounds. He has brown eyes, brown hair and multiple tattoos. King is 5-foot-8-inches and 165 pounds. He has black hair, hazel eyes and multiple tattoos.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Ladies and gentlemen, the Rolling Stones.

With Wednesday's expected announcement of a new Stones tour, those words will again signal the start of a rock 'n' roll show. Young music fans may wonder why there's still a fuss over dad's, or grandpa's, favorite band. Here are five reasons to care.

1. LIVING HISTORY: Elvis Presley is dead. The Beatles will never perform again. The Who is down to two originals. Membership of rock's Greatest Generation is fading. The Stones, Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney are links to a special time in music history, and you can still see them in concert. If the Stones' form of classic rock moves you, it's hard to conceive of a band today building such an impressive catalog in the same style. Fashion, and the business, has moved on.

2. LIVE BAND: They'll never admit it, but deep down the Stones surely know they haven't made memorable new music in decades. They have, however, kept their chops and deliver the songs you want to hear with power and precision. You can't find a better Stones tribute band. The Stones are fully aware of their best work; you won't hear a flabby show. The past few times out, it has been more than greatest hits performed on autopilot.

3. KEITH RICHARDS: There was a time, kids, when Keith was a menace to society, a walking advertisement of the evils of drugs. Now he's a beloved figure, humanized by one of rock's best biographies and the model for Johnny Depp's Capt. Jack Sparrow character in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. He's your cool, crazy uncle. He plays a pretty decent guitar, too.

4. CHARLIE'S FACE: There's no better facial expression in rock 'n' roll than the bemused one worn by drummer Charlie Watts as he takes in the madness around him. Watch Watts when Mick Jagger does a particularly audacious chicken strut.

5. THE LAST TIME: We'll be surprised if this is labeled as some sort of retirement tour; they've been subjected to so many age jokes over the years that the topic itself is old. And these men are in surprisingly good shape for the years of hard living. But Richards is 69, the same age as Mick. Watts will be 72 in June. Reality is catching up. Probably even before they expect it, they'll be singing "The Last Time" for the last time.

Russia delivers aid for Syria refugees in Lebanon

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A Russian plane carrying 36 tonnes of humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees in Lebanon landed in Beirut on Wednesday, the first such shipment by Moscow which has supported President Bashar al-Assad throughout the two-year-old conflict.

Russia's ambassador to Beirut Alexander Zasypkin said the Ilyushin transport plane brought blankets, food supplies and generators to Lebanon, where the United Nations says 398,000 Syrians are seeking refuge from the conflict in their country.

Moscow has supported Assad throughout the revolt by refusing to consider sanctions on Damascus, vetoing three resolutions condemning his crackdown on opposition groups and supplying weapons to the Syrian army.

The wave of refugees is threatening to overwhelm authorities in a country of only four million people, whose prime minister Najib Mikati resigned last month over disputes in cabinet which have been inflamed by the Syrian civil war.

Mikati, still serving in a caretaker capacity, and President Michel Suleiman have appealed for international help to cope with the flood of refugees escaping a civil war between Assad's forces and rebels.

Zasypkin told reporters at the airport that Moscow would send another shipment of aid next week and two more later this month.
