73-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Shoots 2 Holes-In-One In Same Round

WEST CALDWELL, N.J. (CBSNewYork) ? Erroll Cook said he knew the first shot off the tee at Mountain Ridge Country Club was a good one the moment he hit it. The second, though, two holes later, was the real surprise.

The 73-year-old cancer survivor is one the few people on the planet ever to have sunk two holes-in-one in the same round of golf, let alone the same nine holes.

It happened last weekend when Cook was playing with friends on the manicured Donald Ross Course in West Caldwell. The first shot was on the 14th hole, a straight 150-yard Par 3 that looked good leaving the tee but rolled out of sight after landing on the green. Cook, his partners, and the caddy all searched the area without luck until they found his ball where they least expected: in the cup. He?d aced it.

That?s happened before. Twenty minutes later, though, Cook joked at the tee of another Par 3, when he was asked what the odds were of doing it again (his partners didn?t know off-hand but subsequent research indicates the odds are roughly 1-in-67 Million ). They laughed, he swung and they watched it happen again.

?It want over the water,? he told CBS 2?s Lou Young, ?and there?s a (sand) trap. It went over the trap, then five yards to the right and all of us just went hysterical when it went in!?

Fellow golfer Dr. Joel Matkin said they were all amazed.

?I think our eyes popped out of our heads. It was dramatic,? Matkin said.

Cook said he doesn?t remember his reaction but added, ?They told me I fell down laughing. It didn?t sink in for a little while.? He paused and then broke into a broad smile, ?It still hasn?t sunk in.?

Matkin said he immediately checked on Cook to make sure he was okay. The retired financial executive has had health problems over the years, including a serious bout with cancer that he beat with a bone marrow transplant 19 years ago. Cook assured his friends he was fine. Back at the clubhouse some were skeptical at first, but then transitioned to amazement as the witnesses all confirmed his claim.

?He is a good golfer,? buddy Marty Sarver said, ?but not THAT good.?

When asked how Cook would explain it then, Sarver said, ?You can?t. It?s just wonderful.?

Fellow golfer Norm Feinstein said he?s had three holes-in-one in decades of playing golf, but had never heard of it happening twice to the same golfer in the same round.

?You can?t put odds on it,? Feinstein said, ?because I?m not sure it?s ever happened before.?

It turns out that in the history of the sport roughly 150 people have managed the two-in-one trick. Very few, though, managed to accomplish the feat in the same nine holes. It?s only happened twice on the PGA Tour. Daniel Chopra managed it on the 7th and 17th holes at Pebble Beach earlier this year during a practice round.

Please offer your thoughts in the comments section below ?

Kate Middleton To Sleep On The Streets Of London?

By Ikam Acosta

Kate Middleton, The Duchess Of Cambridge, wants to be on the streets to tackle London's homeless epidemic. The Duchess, living up to her role as goodwill ambassador, would like join British actress and activist Lisa Maxwell by sleeping on the streets.

The "Sleep Out" public awareness campaign will raise awareness about the plight undergone by London's homeless population. Maxwell commented on Middleton's desire to participate in the "Sleep Out." She said,

"She asked me about sleeping out, so I said: 'Next time I do it, you're doing it with me. No excuses."

Way to take the Duchess to task, Lisa! Kate isn't the only member of the royal family who is rallying for the homeless. Hubby Prince William is a patron of the Centrepoint charity, an organization which helps give homeless people a future.

However, a spokesperson for the royal couple denies that reports of Kate's upcoming "Sleep Out" are true. The spokesperson said,

"There are no plans for the Duchess to sleep out for Centrepoint. She doesn't have any official role with Centrepoint, but will obviously continue to support the Duke in his patronage of the charity."

During Prince William's 2009 "Sleep Out" near Blackfriars Bridge, the young Prince nearly got run over by a street sweeper. Chief executive of Centrepoint, Seyi Obakin, said,

"He was determined to do it as patron to raise awareness of the problem and to be able to understand a little better what rough sleepers go through."

A spokesperson from St. James' Palace said,

"Prince William took away from the experience the importance of tackling all the issues that cause people to be homeless and stay homeless, from drug dependency to mental health problems."

Would you sleep on the streets to raise awareness about the homeless population?

Nora Ephron Remembered By Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman

'At a dinner table and on a film set she lifted us all with wisdom and wit,' Hanks says of late filmmaker.
By Jocelyn Vena

Photo:

Nora Ephron's impact on the world of film — particularly romantic comedies, thanks to her memorable scripts for big-screen classics "When Harry Met Sally ..." and "Sleepless in Seattle" — was felt in the wake of the news that the screenwriter, journalist and director passed away on Tuesday at the age of 71 from pneumonia.

Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, who both appeared in "Sleepless in Seattle" (Hanks also later appeared in Ephron's "You've Got Mail"), recalled the times they spent with her when the cameras weren't rolling. "Nora Ephron was a journalist/artist who knew what was important to know; how things really worked, what was worthwhile, who was fascinating and why," Hanks and Wilson said in a statement to E! News. "At a dinner table and on a film set she lifted us all with wisdom and wit, mixed with love for us and love for life. Rita and I are so very sad to lose our friend who brought so much joy to all who were lucky enough to know her."

Comedian and 2012 Academy Awards host Billy Crystal recalled the joy of appearing in "When Harry Met Sally ..." in his remembrance of the multi-hyphenate talent. "I am very sad to learn of Nora's passing," he said in a statement. "She was a brilliant writer and humorist. Being her Harry to Meg's Sally will always have a special place in my heart. I was very lucky to get to say her words."

Carrie Fisher, who appeared alongside Crystal in the iconic film, said in a statement to the Boston Globe, "In a world where we're told that you can't have it all, Nora consistently proved that adage wrong. A writer, director, wife, mother, chef, wit — there didn't seem to be anything she couldn't do. And not just do it, but excel at it, revolutionize it, set the bar for every other screenwriter, novelist, director. She was inspiring, intimidating and insightful. She was so, so alive. It makes no sense to me that she isn't anymore. My heart goes out to her family and the many others who treasured her."

The outpouring of love for Ephron hardly ended there. Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep, who starred in two Ephron classics, "Heartburn" and 2009's "Julie & Julia," noted that her interests and intellect touched on all subject matters.

"Nora just looked at every situation and cocked her head and thought, 'Hmmmm, how can I make this more fun?' " Streep said. "You could call on her for anything: doctors, restaurants, recipes, speeches or just a few jokes, and we all did it, constantly. She was an expert in all the departments of living well."

Nicole Kidman, who starred in Ephron's quirky big-screen take on the classic 1960s sitcom "Bewitched," noted that it was a "joy to be around" the writer. "She was so smart, warm and funny. I am so grateful that she was my friend and we had the opportunity to work together. My thoughts and love are with her family at this time. I will never forget the dinners, games and laughter we all shared," Kidman said.

Leave your condolences for Nora Ephron's family and friends in the comments below

G20 Entrepreneurs Summit ? Mexico City | IoD Blog

Last month I blogged about the journey of the G20 Young Entrepreneurs Alliance (G20 YEA), which is jointly lead in the UK by Young Brits and Prince?s Youth Business International and I also promised to keep you posted going forward. So here goes?

G20
A few weeks ago myself and a group of young entrepreneurs from the UK returned from the G20 YEA summit in Mexico City, which was held in conjunction with the 2012 G20 Leaders? Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico, the leaders summit has only just concluded. Over 400 young entrepreneurs from all G20 countries were present at the summit and their collective message was a simple one: ?The Leaders of the G20 nations must put youth entrepreneurship at the forefront of job and wealth creation?

This voice was articulated in full through the signing of the G20YEA communiqu?, which called upon the G20 Leaders to focus on entrepreneurship as an answer to the issues we are currently facing around youth unemployment and slow economic growth. We handed this communiqu? directly to Felipe Calder?n, President of Mexico and the host of the G20 Leaders Summit at the end of our time in Mexico City.

The main focus of the communiqu? was on five key actions that would provide the driver for inclusive economic growth, innovation, job creation and social cohesion, these actions were:

  • Creating a continuum of traditional and innovative funding sources with incentives through all stages of business growth
  • Increasing access to simplified information and integrated youth enterprise support with strong knowledge and skills infrastructure
  • Promoting a collaborative environment across private and public sectors, civil society and academia, that enables young entrepreneurs to start, grow, learn and have a second chance in business, within their countries and internationally
  • Minimizing regulatory and tax barriers for start-up and early-stage businesses to reduce costs and increase efficiencies
  • Fostering a stronger youth entrepreneurship culture through promoting and teaching entrepreneurship and raising awareness

The communiqu? concluded by stating that the Alliance and the entrepreneurs they represented, want to work together with their respective governments to help ensure young entrepreneurs and their businesses can play their role in being the architects of the 21st century. You can view a copy of the communiqu? here.

Since the founding of the G20 YEA at the Toronto G20 Leaders summit in June of 2010, I personally feel that it 2 short years we have created something truly unique, pulling together the organisations that represent young entrepreneurs at a national level within all the G20 member nations. The communiqu? which was signed represents their collective views on what they feel needs to be done to provide the catalyst for entrepreneurial growth and development across the globe.

I will leave you with some quote from those who represented the UK at the G20 YEA summit.

Glynn Pegler, CEO of Culture Group, Co-Founder of Young Brits and Lead Delegate from the UK to the G20 YEA Summit went on to say:

?The platform provided by the G20 YES is an amazing opportunity for young entrepreneurs like myself to be able to create positive social change all over the globe. Entrepreneurship is the single biggest creator of employment around the world and so its vital that we create the right environments for entrepreneurs to start their businesses and to flourish.?

Helen Gale, Director of Research and Policy at Prince?s Youth Business International and UK Co-President on the G20 YEA went on to say:

?We are the voice of young entrepreneurs and we welcome the communiqu??s call for integrated youth enterprise support, combining financial with non-financial services.?

Chris Knell, Vice Chairman of the IoDs Young Director Forum and a UK delegate to the G20 YEA Summit gave the following excellent summing up:

?The G20YEA Summit delegates have shown they are the change agents, as opposed to spectators who complain from the sidelines, but take no action to affect change? I will leave you with this, what are YOU going to do to help build that fair and prosperous world?

As Head of Influencer Relations, Alex?s role entails close liaison with IoD members and the wider business community on subjects ranging from leadership, entrepreneurialism and climate change to innovation, technology and global markets. He is the IoD?s representative from many groups including the UKTI?s Asia Task Force, the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) for India, and an Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Keeping Your Home Cool For Less! | Kent HVAC Contractor

Heat getting you down? The cost of cooling your living environment even worse? Well, you?re in luck with these tips to keep your house or apartment cooler while remaining eco-friendly. The old-fashioned fan being at the top of this list. Ceiling or floor fans help to circulate the air while creating a nice, cooling breeze. A trick called ?ice-water fanning? (placing a bowl of shallow ice water behind a directional fan) will create a cooler breeze for any room! However, fans circulate the air, but do not necessarily cool your entire house. Therefore, when leaving a room, turn the fan off to conserve electricity.

Utilize your windows during the evening hours once the sun goes down. Doing so gives your air conditioning unit a nice break while letting in that sweet summer air. While the sun is beaming high during the day, be sure to keep your blinds and shades closed tightly to keep out the extra heat that is assisting in warming your house.

Be weary of the usage of appliances in your house as well. The use of your oven, washing machine, dish washer, or dryer may be putting off some unwanted heat. A few alternative options are available for the lack of use with your routinely used appliances; grill your food, air-dry your clothing, hand wash the dishes.

Make sure your house has proper insulation. Insulating your home thoroughly, especially your attic space, will create vast improvements in keeping you cool without cranking up your thermostat. Not only will this insulation keep out the heat in the winter and keep in your cold, it will have the opposite effect in the winter. Weather stripping around your windows and doors will also assist in keeping the heat out and the cool air in.

Reimagining Home Improvement: Houzz vs. Better Homes and ...

We're running a series based on Mary Meeker's Internet Trends report mid-year, in which she listed 50+ industries that are being "reimagined" by social and mobile technologies. One of her slides was about the home improvement information industry, which up till recently revolved around broadcast media like magazines and TV. Meeker pointed to a new generation of home improvement services, like Houzz and One Kings Lane, that is making this industry much more two-way... and useful!

Houzz describes itself as "the leading online platform for home remodeling and design." The company told us it has five million unique users per month and has had over two million downloads of its iPad and iPhone apps.

The previous generation of home improvement information services is typified by Better Homes and Gardens, a magazine boasting the fourth highest circulation in the United States. Better Homes and Gardens is owned by The Meredith Corporation and has been around since 1922.?It has a website at bhg.com?which,?at first glance, appears similar to Houzz. But let's look more closely...

Houzz (House + Buzz, Geddit?)

As well as offering a?Pinterest-like catalog of colorful home designs for users to browse, Houzz has hundreds of articles and community discussions. However, the real killer feature of Houzz is that it connects homeowners with designers and home improvement professionals.

Houzz helps you organize a home improvement project, with a concept it calls "Ideabook." I'm currently looking to buy a dining table, so I created a new Ideabook for that. I then entered the search term "dining table" into Houzz. The homepage has photos as its default search type and that brought up 7,124 "dining table" home design photos. I added a few to my new Ideabook.

The thing is, I'm no interior design expert. I need a little help here. Happily, at the bottom of the photo results page for "dining table", there was a link to an article entitled Discover Your Dining Table Style. The article gave some handy tips, encouraging me to add styles I liked into my dining table Ideabook.

Houzz follows the Pinterest model even further, by offering an "Add to Ideabook" bookmarklet - so you can save images from external websites into your Ideabooks (privately, if you don't want the whole world to see).

There's a good discussion area in Houzz, where you can ask a question to the community or browse existing questions. You can also follow people on Houzz, whether it's professionals or other homeowners. Overall, the site has very strong community features.

Finally, it's worth noting that Houzz has well-designed iPad and iPhone apps.

The one area which Houzz could improve on is e-commerce. Houzz isn't a full e-commerce operation, it simply links to external sites. To hire a professional Interior Designer or purchase a dining table, I'd need to go to the provider's external website or call them up. It would make a lot of sense if I could order a new dining room table - or even a second-hand one - from within Houzz. Or order the services of an Interior Designer who has good ratings.

How Does Better Homes and Gardens Compare?

I tested the BHG website with the same search for a dining table. It turned up 33 articles, 2 videos and 115 slideshows (although a quick browse through the slideshows revealed that many were about more than just dining tables).

BHG does have some good articles on dining tables, such as one gradly titled Ultimate Guide to Dining Room Tables. But overall, the BHG user experience is inferior to Houzz. There is no way for me to organize projects, a la Houzz's Ideabooks, and there isn't much community on BHG. The site also has tech glitches - I had trouble with the signup process and the Pinterest link led me to its Twitter page.

Mary Meeker described the reimagined home improvement website as a "Communication Platform for Designers & Consumers [featuring] Share / Discover & Click-And-Buy." Houzz has excellent discovery and sharing features, as well as a large and active community. It has a massive database of products - over 7,000 photos of dining room tables, for example. The one thing it doesn't have, as noted above, is click-and-buy. But (as with Pinterest) this is surely the next step for Houzz.

As for BHG, right now they remain the 4th most popular magazine in the US according to circulation. But with its current website, which is limited and not very functional compared to Houzz, it's hard to see how it can continue to remain the leader in the home improvement information market. Especially with the financial backing Houzz has - at the end of last year, Houzz received $11.6 million in a Series B round led by Sequoia Capital.

I'm curious to check back in 5 years time and see how the two products compare then. It seems to me that Houzz has a massive opportunity to bring a reimagined home improvement service to a mainstream user base.

10 Reasons To Leave The Laptop And ... - Business 2 Community

With so much at stake in every prospect encounter, why would I promote the idea of leaving the laptop, PowerPoint presentation and LCD behind?

I?ve been working with sales and marketing teams for the past 8 years as a consultant to help align sales and marketing messages and create clarity around value creation. With one or two exceptions from the hundreds of presentations I?ve seen, they all follow the same format.

It?s all about me, my big office, my stuff, my awards, my customers (slide 4), my partners, my products, my compelling features and my unforgettable and highly differentiated benefits.

It?s like there was a gold standard master PowerPoint presentation written 20 years ago and every presentation since has inherited the format?.only the buildings and the names change.

If you want a good laugh and some introspection take a look at the Chicken, Chicken, Chicken video below (Thanks to Neil Warren?for making me aware of this).

?

Buyers actually don?t need or want your presentation, except maybe after you have done discovery, figured out their needs, built consensus around their ideal solution and then I suggest that there are better ways to communicate it.

Here?s a new rule for you: In B2B selling, ?use PowerPoint in the first meeting, don?t get a second one.?

PowerPoint, a Barrier to Success in B2B sales

We need to be encouraging message ownership and teaching salespeople communication and language skills, not training on PowerPoint presentation skills.
When a salesperson is presenting, they learn nothing. When they are having a conversation they have a chance to learn what they want to know.

David Sandler was a sales trainer in the pre-Interent age. He had a rule for salespeople?take nothing with you on your first meeting with the prospect. The goal of the first meeting is to qualify the opportunity and to get another meeting. He was talking about the insurance industry and the salesperson?s briefcase. The briefcase with the insurance brochures, applications, actuarial charts etc, has been replaced in B2B sales with a laptop computer, PowerPoint presentation and LCD projector. He likened the salesperson?s briefcase to a child?s security blanket.

His advice is as relevant today as it was then and I encourage salespeople to take nothing with them to a first call. Isn?t this a bit radical?
Yes it?s radical and the reasons I suggest why it might be a good idea are as follows.

  1. By taking nothing with you, you disarm the prospect?.they are expecting the laptop and the LCD.
  2. Taking nothing with you signals to the prospect that you are prepared to have a conversation rather than a presentation?.and they will welcome this.
  3. Taking nothing with you forces you to think through in advance of the call, what you need to get from the meeting and the insight you want to give the prospect and how you are going to lead the conversation.
  4. By taking nothing with you, you will have to commit to memory a number of proof points and anecdotes to communicate how others have been able to create value through using your products
  5. Taking nothing with you means elevating your communication skills to a level where you effectively communicate with the prospect without the PowerPoint crutch
  6. Taking nothing with you forces salespeople into a situation where they have to own the company message and how the products/services create value.
  7. Taking nothing with you means you might actually learn something on the sales call instead of doing most of the talking. Sandler suggested that salespeople do 30% of the talking and buyers 70%. If the average salesperson did 50% of the talking, it would be a huge improvement and they would sell a lot more stuff.
  8. Taking nothing with you differentiates you from nearly everyone else your buyer will meet, -they are the ones with the laptop/PowerPoint security blanket.
  9. Taking nothing with you takes courage and the likelihood is you will raise the energy level in the room.
  10. Taking nothing with you on the first call and committing to your outcome will make you a better salesperson

Take-Aways

  1. According to extensive research conducted by the Corporate Executive Board, published in The Challenger Sale, 53% of the contribution to customer loyalty comes from the sales experience itself. Only 38% comes from the combined value of the company brand, product and service. (Price is 9% by the way).
How you communicate and what you communicate in moments of truth when in front of customers is what matters and this is where companies need to invest training dollars.
  2. Message ownership comes with deliberate practice and feedback from experts (sales managers) and most salespeople need encouragement to practice skills.
  3. The communication and language skills taught in a typical NLP Practitioner certification will help salespeople elevate their ability to communicate and to listen more effectively.
  4. Salespeople need to master visual storytelling skills, not PowerPoint presentation skills.

(AP) ? NATO leaders will meet this week to discuss whether and how to respond to Syria's downing of a Turkish jet in what Turkey insists was international airspace. The incident has spiked regional tensions caused by the conflict in Syria, where reports Sunday said nearly 40 people died in new clashes between rebels and regime forces.

The jet's wreckage was found in the Mediterranean at a depth of 4,265 feet (1,300 meters), Turkish state media reported Sunday. The two pilots remain unaccounted for.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the jet was on a training flight to test Turkey's radar capabilities, not spying on Syria. He said the plane mistakenly strayed into Syrian airspace Friday, but was quickly warned to leave by Turkish authorities and was a mile inside international airspace when it was shot down off the coast of Latakia.

Syria insisted Saturday that the shooting was "not an attack" and that the aircraft had violated its airspace. But Turkish authorities say Syria didn't warn the Turkish plane nor send its own jets to confront it. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was expected to make a statement Tuesday and might announce some retaliatory steps.

"No one should dare to test Turkey's capabilities," Davutoglu said Sunday.

Meantime, at the request of Turkey, NATO's governing body will meet Tuesday to discuss the incident, said Oana Lungescu, a NATO spokeswoman. The consultations will focus on article 4 of NATO's founding Washington Treaty.

"Under article 4, any ally can request consultations whenever, in the opinion of any of them, their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened," Lungescu said. The North Atlantic Council ? the ambassadors of the 28 NATO countries ? will decide whether to respond, she said.

The last time article 4 was invoked was nine years ago ? also by Turkey ? after tensions with neighboring Iraq escalated. However, that case did not lead to the invocation of article 5, which declares that an attack against any single NATO country shall be considered as an attack against them all.

Despite some opposition leaders' calls for Western military intervention in Syria, the United States and allies have been hesitant to get involved in what could prove a protracted conflict, preferring the diplomatic route. Syrian allies Russia and China have already shielded Syria from U.N. sanctions and stridently oppose any military intervention.

It's unlikely the downing of the Turkish plane will change those calculations, despite Ankara's appeal for the NATO meeting.

In October 1989, two Syrian MiG-21s violated Turkish air space and shot down a Turkish plane on a geographical survey mission, killing all five crew members. Syria at the time promised to severely punish the pilots, who disregarded Turkish orders not to enter Turkish airspace.

Dogu Ergil, a professor of political science at the Ankara University, told private NTV television that Turkey had repeatedly sent its jets across the Syrian border for several weeks to show its military muscle at the time.

Turkey has been one of the most vociferous critics of Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime as it has cracked down over the past 15 months on an increasingly armed popular uprising. Opposition activists say the conflict has killed 14,000 people, most of them civilians.

The plane's downing has already drawn international criticism from other countries pushing Assad to stop his crackdown.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Sunday he was "gravely concerned by the Syrian regime's action in shooting down" the plane and that Davutoglu had told him no warning was given.

"This outrageous act underlines how far beyond accepted behavior the Syrian regime has put itself, and I condemn it wholeheartedly," Hague said in a statement. "The Assad regime should not make the mistake of believing that it can act with impunity. It will be held to account for its behavior."

Hague met last week with United Nations and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan for talks on plans for an international summit, while British officials discussed the issue in Geneva on Saturday with members of Annan's team. Hague noted Sunday that "The UK stands ready to pursue robust action at the United Nations Security Council."

Italy's foreign minister decried the shooting down of the plane as "a further, very grave and unacceptable action by the Assad regime." In a written statement, Giulio Terzi promised that Italy will play an active role in the NATO meeting Tuesday.

Syrian activists reported violence in different parts of the country Sunday, saying nearly 40 people were killed.

The deadliest incident was in the northern town of Ariha where a shell hit a home killing seven members of the same family, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.? A video posted online showed the seven men's bodies, some badly mutilated, including one who had part of his head blown off.

Activists also reported intense shelling and clashes between rebels and troops in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour and the central city of Homs, which has been under a government attack for the past two weeks.

Earlier Sunday, activists said rebels captured a military base in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo, confiscating large amounts of ammunition. The Observatory said 16 government troops died in the attacks on the base near the rebel-held town of Daret Azzeh and nearby checkpoints early Sunday.

Area activist Mohammed Saeed said the rebels had removed hundreds of artillery shells from the base. Saeed added via Skype that troops retaliated with intense shelling on the area using helicopter gunships.

On Friday, state media said 25 people were kidnapped by "terrorists" and killed in Daret Azzeh. Activists said the 25 killed were pro-regime gunmen known as shabiha.

Syria's state-run SANA news agency, meanwhile, said gunmen from Turkey clashed with Syrian border guards in Rabiah, a region in the coastal Latakia province. SANA said several infiltrators died in the late Saturday clash, while others reportedly returned to Turkey. It said several Syrian border guards were hurt, but didn't specify how many.

Turkey denies sheltering armed Syrian rebels, although many Syrian refugees have fled to camps on the Turkish side of the border.

Also on Sunday, Syrian opposition groups met in Brussels to hash out differences and plan for a democratic transition. The disparate groups are divided over whether outside military intervention would help or hurt and whether to engage in dialogue with Assad's regime. The conference, attended by some 50 people, will continue Monday.

Jordanian Information Minister Sameeh Maaytah, meanwhile, said Sunday that three other Syrian pilots had defected last week, even before a pilot flew his warplane into neighboring Jordan. He said the other three crossed overland into Jordan. He was unsure if the four pilots knew each other or had coordinated their escape from Syria.

(AP) ? Jerry Sandusky was convicted Friday of sexually assaulting 10 boys over 15 years, accusations that shattered the Happy Valley image of Penn State football and led to the firing of Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno.

Sandusky, a 68-year-old retired defensive coach who was once Paterno's heir apparent, was found guilty of 45 of 48 counts.

Sandusky showed little emotion as the verdict was read. The judge ordered him to be taken to the county jail to await sentencing in about three months. Many of the charges carry mandatory minimum sentences and Sandusky is certain to spend the rest of his life in prison.

The judge revoked Sandusky's bail and ordered him jailed. In court, Sandusky half-waved toward family as the sheriff led him away. Outside, he calmly walked to a sheriff's car with his hands cuffed in front of him.

The accuser known in court papers as Victim 6 broke down in tears upon hearing the verdicts in the courtroom. Afterward, a prosecutor embraced him and said, "Did I ever lie to you?"

The man, now 25, testified that Sandusky called himself the "tickle monster" in a shower assault. He declined to comment to a reporter afterward.

His mother said: "Nobody wins. We've all lost."

Almost immediately after the judge adjourned, loud cheers could be heard from a couple hundred people gathered outside the courthouse as word quickly spread that Sandusky had been convicted. The crowd included victim advocates and local residents with their kids. Many held up their smartphones to take pictures as people filtered out of the building.

As Sandusky was placed in the cruiser to be taken to jail, someone yelled at him to "rot in hell." Others hurled insults and he shook his head no in response.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola was interrupted by cheers from the crowd on courthouse steps when he said, "The sentence that Jerry will receive will be a life sentence."

Eight young men testified in a central Pennsylvania courtroom about a range of abuse, from kissing and massages to groping, oral sex and anal rape. For two other alleged victims, prosecutors relied on testimony from a university janitor and then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary, whose account of a sexual encounter between Sandusky and a boy of about 10 ultimately led to the Paterno's dismissal and the university president's ouster.

Sandusky did not take the stand in his own defense.

After the verdict was announced, defense attorney Karl Rominger said it was "a tough case" with a lot of charges and that an appeal was certain. He said the defense team "didn't exactly have a lot of time to prepare."

Amendola said: "The jury acted in good faith. The jury acted on the evidence presented to it. We had a good jury."

Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly thanked the accusers who testified, calling them "brave men."

She said she hoped the verdict "helps these victims heal ... and helps other victims of abuse to come forward."

She said: "One of the recurring themes in this case was, 'Who would believe a kid?' The answer is 'We here in Bellefonte, Pa., would believe a kid."

The ex-coach had repeatedly denied the allegations, and his defense suggested that his accusers had a financial motive to make up stories, years after the fact. His attorney also painted Sandusky as the victim of overzealous police investigators who coached the alleged victims into giving accusatory statements.

But jurors believed the testimony that, in the words of lead prosecutor Joseph McGettigan III, Sandusky was a "predatory pedophile."

One accuser testified that Sandusky molested him in the locker-room showers and in hotels while trying to ensure his silence with gifts and trips to bowl games. He also said Sandusky had sent him "creepy love letters."

Another spoke of forced oral sex and instances of rape in the basement of Sandusky's home, including abuse that left him bleeding. He said he once tried to scream for help, knowing that Sandusky's wife was upstairs, but figured the basement must be soundproof.

Another, a foster child, said Sandusky warned that he would never see his family again if he ever told anyone what happened.

And just hours after the case went to jurors, lawyers for one of Sandusky's six adopted children, Matt, said he had told authorities that his father abused him.

Matt Sandusky had been prepared to testify on behalf of prosecutors, the statement said. The lawyers said they arranged for Matt Sandusky to meet with law enforcement officials but did not explain why he didn't testify.

"This has been an extremely painful experience for Matt and he has asked us to convey his request that the media respect his privacy," the statement said. It didn't go into details about his allegations.

Defense witnesses, including Jerry Sandusky's wife, Dottie, described his philanthropic work with children over the years, and many spoke in positive terms about his reputation in the community. Prosecutors had portrayed those efforts as an effective means by which Sandusky could camouflage his molestation as he targeted boys who were the same age as participants in The Second Mile, a charity he founded in the 1970s for at-risk youth.

Sandusky's arrest in November led the Penn State trustees to fire Paterno as head coach, saying he exhibited a lack of leadership after fielding a report from McQueary. The scandal also led to the ouster of university president Graham Spanier, and criminal charges against two university administrators for failing to properly report suspected child abuse and perjury.

The two administrators, athletic director Tim Curley and now-retired vice president Gary Schultz, are fighting the allegations and await trial.

Sandusky had initially faced 52 counts of sex abuse. The judge dropped four counts during the trial, saying two were unproven, one was brought under a statute that didn't apply and another was duplicative.
