Conrad Murray to Katherine Jackson: Let's Chat!

Conrad Murray is sitting in prison after being convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson.

Yet this doctor somehow thinks he's the one who can fix the ongoing Jackson family saga, which has centered around contention over the late singer's will and the whereabouts of his mother, Katherine Jackson, for nearly two weeks now.

Katherine is now back at home with her grandchildren, but even young Prince Jackson is suspicious over why she was taken by other relatives in the first place.

Katherine Jackson at the MicMurray Trial

"I've been told that she has a desire to speak with me before she departs this life," Murray said in a statement released to CNN through his attorneys. "Seeing that she is up in age and in questionable health, and the fact that she is the mother of a very dear departed friend, it would give me great pleasure to sit with her one on one and answer any questions she might have."

Katherine Jackson spoke out this week and claimed she simply needed a vacation, but major questions still surround the situation, namely: Why didn't she contact her grandkids while away?

"I do not want Mrs. Jackson to suffer. She remains as dear to me as my own mother, unbeknownst to her," Murray added, saying Katherine is on his prison visitor list and referring to her as "extremely sad."

Estate Planning and Writing a Will | Hellobee

Talking about and planning for death isn?t something that anyone ever wants to discuss.? It was never topic of conversation around our household, but it is now because Papa Jumper and I are in the midst of planning our estate and preparing our will.? We?ve talked about writing a will for some time now, but have always put it off.? Who wants to think about death?? We?re young and we?re healthy.? The chance of either of us dying any time soon is slim to none.? But what if something happens?? We aren?t prepared.

Papa Jumper and I have been working with a financial advisor for the last six years.? He helps us plan for our future, make investments, and he also oversees our life insurance policies.? Shortly after we found out we were expecting Baby Jumper, we met with our advisor who helped us execute our new financial goals. Since Papa Jumper is the primary source of income in our family, we wanted to increase his life insurance policy.

Papa Jumper travels infrequently for work, but his latest trip out of the country is what made us decide we should really get a move on our planning.? A few weeks ago, I called our advisor to re-write our beneficiaries.? We assumed that all we had to do to protect Baby Jumper (in the event of our deaths) was to appoint her beneficiary of all our policies.? Turns out, that?s not the best thing for us to do.? His advice was to write a will, have all of our assets put into a trust for Baby Jumper, then re-write our beneficiary plans to have all monies go into the trust.? This is great (for us) for a few reasons:

1.? Baby Jumper won?t have instant access to a lump sum of money.? An executor will be named (in our will), who will then be able to use the money to support and raise Baby Jumper.? The court will appoint a person who will oversee the funds to make sure that they?re being used correctly.? In other words, the Executor can?t make a withdrawal to put in a new swimming pool.

2.? The money will be protected from a potentially young and careless person.? This means Baby Jumper can?t blow through her trust fund making frivolous purchases.? It?s meant for her future, not ?right now I really want a cool car because I?m 16.?? We have the choice of making the funds available to her at any age, though the most common are 21 and 25.

Our attorney is helping us plan our estate (what happens to things like our house, cars and our? liquid assets), write a will (who has guardianship over our children, who will be the executor of estate and guardianship, and specify how debts should be paid), set up a power of attorney (who makes medical and financial decisions for us in the event we are unable to make them for ourselves) and a trust fund (where we will put the money from our life insurance and retirement funds).? It sounds like a lot ? and it is ? but it?s an incredibly simple process. Our attorney walked us through every step of the way, and has been making it a very easy and stress-free process. We?re able to update our will as we age, which means we can change anything we want to.

We?ve discussed options with one another, weighed pros and cons, and have appointed people to take care of each portion of our estate.? We?ve named guardians, back-up power of attorneys, and executors of the estate and the trust.? After we decided who we wanted to do what, we approached each person and asked them if they?d be willing to carry out our wishes.? This was an important step for us, and for the people we?ve named ? what if they aren?t strong enough to carry out our medical wishes?? What if they aren?t willing to care for a child, or our future children?? It was important that we all be on the same page before putting everything in writing.

I know this post may be a little overwhelming, so simply put, here?s what we?re doing:

- Naming guardianship of our child(ren)
- Naming the executor of estate.? This person will sell our house, handle our finances, contact billers to inform them of our death
- Setting up a Trustee ? the person who will manage money until Baby Jumper is old enough to do so herself.? We can pre-determine what age we want her to have full access to the funds without the supervision of a Trustee.
- Setting up Medical and Financial Power of Attorney.? This person will make our healthcare and financial decisions in the event we aren?t able to do so for ourselves (or for each other).

Have you ever considered writing a will, or setting up a trust fund?? Or do you already have one in place?

Paul McCartney Composing Music for Bungie's Destiny Game

After word of Bungie?s new sci-fi shooter game Destiny was leaked a while back, we now know that Paul McCartney will be composing original music for Destiny!

The Beatles musical legend Paul McCartney is currently busy composing music with Bungie. He confirmed this via his official Twitter account, saying:

?I?m really excited to be working on writing music with @bungie, the studio that made Halo.? -Paul McCartney

?I?m really excited to be working on writing music with @bungie, the studio that made Halo.? He hinted at this back in January 2012 when he said to be ?working on music for a computer game.?

Destiny is part of Bungie?s ten-year publishing deal with Activision. So while no release year has been confirmed for the game, we do know that Destiny will be Bungie?s first multiplatform title in a long time, as it?ll be available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Paul McCartney has composed a lot of timeless classics like ?Let It Be?, but it?s ?Yesterday? stand-out tune that has made it a staple to learn to play in music classes the world over. So he?s definitely the go-to-guy to create memorable songs for Destiny.

PS: Whenever I say ?Destiny?, I keep getting flashbacks to the awesome Stargate Universe show who?s titular starship was named Destiny for its mission to track down the God-signal ? explained to be a pattern in the cosmic microwave background radiation left over from the Big Bang indicating life before the Big Bang.

What do you think of Paul McCartney making music for Bungie?s Destiny?

Iran seeks to work with Facebook against porn

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? A semi-official Iranian news agency says police hope to work with Facebook to fight cyber-crimes and pornography ? a turnabout in Tehran's stance toward the social networking giant that it previously banned after activists used it as an organizing tool.

A Tuesday report by ISNA quotes Gen. Kamal Hadianfar, head of Iran's cyber-police, as saying the country is trying to remove pages on Facebook created by Iranian citizens that promote pornography and prostitution.

Gen. Hadianfar said the plan would be made possible by cooperation from Facebook. He did not elaborate.

Authorities banned Facebook following disputed presidential elections in 2009. Tehran accused websites including Facebook and Twitter of being enemy media supporting post-election unrest.

Iranian activists used social networks extensively to organize rallies.

Should I consider buying Arizona short sales?

What are the pros and cons of Arizona short sales and should I consider buying one?

Let?s examine the pros and cons of Arizona short sales vs. a regular sale transaction:

Pros

1. The asking price on Arizona short sales are often less than that of a typical real estate listing.
2. The homes are usually occupied and are well taken care of.
3. Depending on your current market conditions, short sale listings may be all that are available.

Cons

1. The asking price is a little ambiguous. Remember the bank has to be okay with the asking price in the end before they give the approval. If the banks appraiser comes in higher than the list price, then the bank can say they want you to pay the appraised amount.
2. The homes are occupied and are harder to view.
3. The bank may reject the short sale after a few months of waiting. The bank still qualifies the seller to make sure they cannot pay the difference between the asking price and the mortgage amount. Also the price may be too low.
4. Short sales can take a long time. Short sales have been know to take up to a year for approval. Usually it is around three months.

Back to the original question: Should I consider buying Arizona short sales? Well, all in all, it depends on what kind of buyer you are. If you are not in a hurry, and are looking for the best possible deal, then Arizona short sales can be a great way to build wealth or find your dream home.

NCAA gives Penn State 4-year bowl ban, $60 million fine

INDIANAPOLIS ? The NCAA took unprecedented actions against Penn State on Monday in response to the Jerry Sandusky child sexual molestation scandal, fining the school $60 million, cutting scholarships for four years, imposing a four-year postseason ban and vacating all wins from 1998-2011.

Vacating the wins means the late Joe Paterno no longer is the winningest major college football coach in history.

The actions were unprecedented both for their severity and how they unfolded. The normal NCAA enforcement process did not take place. Instead, NCAA president Mark Emmert gained approval from the board of directors for the penalties. The board is made up of 22 college presidents and chancellors.?

Edward J. Ray, the NCAA executive committee chairman and president of Oregon State, said, "Not only does the NCAA have the authority to act in this case, we also have the responsibility."

Ray cited the Sandusky criminal investigation and the recently released Freeh Commission report as reasons for the NCAA actions. Ray noted that Penn State commissioned the Freeh report and agreed with the findings.

[Related: Eric Adelson: Paterno statue debate misses the point]

The $60 million fine, which Emmert said equaled one year of gross revenue from the football team, will be used to establish an endowment to help child sexual abuse victims.

NCAA president Mark Emmert (Getty Images)"No price the NCAA can levy with repair the damage inflicted by Jerry Sandusky on his victims," Emmert said.

Penn State will be banned from the postseason for four years, which includes the Big Ten championship game and any bowl appearance. Initial scholarships have been reduced to 15 from 25 for four years; that means Penn State can sign just 15 recruits a year for four years. In addition, any player can transfer immediately without sitting out a year.

Emmert said Penn State has signed a consent decree in regard to the penalties, and he said the NCAA will work with Penn State to make sure the school implements the procedures called for by the NCAA.

Sandusky, a former Penn State defensive coordinator, was convicted of 45 counts of child molestation and is awaiting sentencing. Civil suits on behalf of Sandusky's victims are expected, and legal experts say Penn State could be liable for tens of millions of dollars.

How Old Is the Endangered Polar Bear?

News | Evolution

A new genetic analysis suggests the polar bear may have survived past climate changes

polar-bear-and-cubPOLAR BEAR: If researchers can better understand how old the polar bear is as a unique species, they will gain a better understanding of how to help the Arctic bear survive human-induced climate change. Image: Scott Schliebe/USFWS

How does a Venus flytrap know when to snap shut? Can it actually feel an insect?s tiny, spindly legs? And how do cherry blossoms know when to bloom? Can they...

Polar bears may have trod the planet for millions of years, according to a new genetic analysis. That suggests the white-coated, massive bears have weathered previous natural climate changes, and may predate the Arctic ice that is their preferred?and only?habitat today, which is why the species future remains uncertain presently.

"There's no guarantee that they'll survive this time," says geneticist Webb Miller of Pennsylvania State University, an author of the study published July 23 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. After all, Miller notes, the species currently lacks much genetic diversity to help it adapt to changing conditions as well as facing unprecedented threats such as heavy metal pollution accumulating in the Arctic. By better understanding how old the species is, the scientists hope to better understand what might be done to allow the polar bear to cope with onrushing climate change and other existential challenges.

By analyzing the genomes of 28 bears?polar bears, including a roughly 120,000-year-old specimen from Norway's Svalbard archipelago, as well as modern brown bears and black bears?the scientists in effect read back in time to a common ancestor at least four million years ago. That finding conflicts with a genetic analysis published in Science earlier this year that suggested the species was only 600,000 years old or so, which the team behind the new research suggests may result from misreading past interbreeding events with closely related brown bears.

In fact, the key problem here may be that technically the polar bear may not be a species at all. "If one defines that two species separate as when they cannot produce viable offspring, then perhaps brown bears and polar bears aren't yet separate species," Miller admits.

What makes a polar bear a polar bear? There's the white coat and black skin as well as less visible differences like a thicker layer of subcutaneous fat layers and richer milk. These and other unique features of adaptation to the harsh conditions of Arctic life have convinced biologists that the polar bears represent a unique type of animal?a species of its own. After all, the brown bear that is its closest living relative lacks all of these adaptations, looks different, eats different food and would not fare well in the harsh conditions out on the Arctic ice.

Yet, brown bears and polar bears, when they meet, can mate, as evidenced both by the genetic record and observations in the wild. Because polar bears have been spending more time off the ice in recent years, they appear to have begun to interbreed with adjacent brown bear populations, and some of these hybrids are into their second generations. If the basic definition of a species is a group of organisms capable of mating and producing fertile offspring only within their own group, the polar bear and brown bear fail to qualify.

Such interbreeding between bear species makes genetic analysis that much more difficult. After all, if the species interbreed even once, that single event can appear to determine the point at which the two species diverged if a scientist happens to analyze only the portion of the genome influenced by that mating event. And the mixing of genetic material has been going on for a long time between polar and brown bears, making disentangling their genetic history that much harder.

Minnie Loves Junior will screen at the Saraton Theatre tomorrow.

WEDNESDAY night will see the Saraton Theatre's silver screen come alive with Aboriginal film and there is still time to be part of the experience.

The Black Screen short film festival - a travelling show from the National Film and Sound Archive (NSFA) brings examples of Aboriginal film-making to audiences in rural, regional and remote areas and it is Grafton's turn tomorrow night.

Black Screen coordinator Andrea Briggs said although the original RSVP cut-off was yesterday, the overwhelming response had prompted organisers to move the screening to the main auditorium and invite more guests.

"We only had 150 seats originally but now we've got 450 - at the moment we've got 250 people confirmed so there's still plenty of room," Ms Briggs said.

Ms Briggs said the response had been overwhelming, particularly when the event only attracted about 40 people last year in Grafton.

The three films on offer tomorrow night are Jandamarra's War, Minnie Loves Junior and the Daly River.

Jandamarra's War, directed by Mitch Torres, follows the tale of Aboriginal warrior Jandamarra who led a rebellion against invading pastoralists in the late 1800's.

Minnie Loves Junior, directed by Andy Mullins, is a poignant story about young love in a small seaside fishing village.

Tales from the Daly River, directed by Steven McGregor, is a cautionary story about an Aboriginal boy exploring his identity and place in the world.

The Black Screen Short film festival kicks-off at Grafton's Saraton Theatre from 6.30pm tomorrow night.

Anyone wishing to attend the film festival must RSVP to Andrea Briggs on andrea.briggs@nfsa.gov.au by no later than 3pm today.

Big tech stocks rally after early? | Advanced E-Commerce,E ...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? That wasn?t so bad, after all.

That?s the sentiment among investors as they digest last week?s smorgasbord of quarterly results from technology companies that included Intel Corp., IBM Corp., Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc. Although reports from the industry bellwethers all featured some troubling signs, their performances indicate the technology sector is largely holding up, even as Europe?s debt crisis undercuts sales and threatens to topple a still-shaky U.S. economy into another recession.

?What you are hearing now is a huge sigh of relief,? said ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall.

As they exhaled, many investors latched on to Intel, IBM, Microsoft and Google. All four of their stocks ended last week higher than they began. That was good news for the Dow Jones industrial average, which also edged upward. The index includes computer chip maker Intel, corporate technology specialist IBM and software maker Microsoft in its basket of 30 stocks that are supposed to reflect the state of U.S. industry.

As a whole, the technology sector is in better shape than Wall Street envisioned. That?s especially heartening amid signs that Europe?s debt woes could cascade into a financial crisis similar to the 2008 meltdown in the U.S. that deepened the Great Recession. The technology-driven Nasdaq composite index ended last week 7 percent higher than where it stood at the beginning of June.

The rally could still lose steam if other major technology companies flop in their upcoming earnings reports for the three months spanning from April through June.

Apple Inc., which has ridden the success of the iPhone and iPad to become the world?s most valuable company, is scheduled to release its quarterly financial results this week. Other major technology companies on this week?s earnings calendar include: chip maker Texas Instruments Inc., computer disk-drive makers Western Digital Corp. and Seagate Technology PLC, business software maker SAP AG, data storage equipment maker EMC Corp. and business software maker VMware Inc.

EMC, VMware and SAP have already revealed their quarterly results either topped or matched analyst estimates, helping to propel their stocks higher in recent weeks. Seagate has said its quarterly revenue missed analysts? targets, but its stock is still slightly higher than before the warning.

Investors haven?t been as sanguine about the pratfalls of other companies. Business software maker Informatica Corp., computer printer maker Lexmark International Inc. and chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. have all been severely punished for earnings letdowns in their latest quarters. Since they issued warnings about their disappointing performances, their stocks have plunged by 18 percent to 33 percent.

AMD spooked investors late Thursday with a glum forecast that included a frank assessment of the personal computer industry, which has been slumping as more people surf the Web on smartphones and tablet computers.

?We expect macro headwinds will continue for the third quarter,? AMD CEO Rory Read told analysts on conference call. ?We also believe the PC industry may be resetting to a new baseline and that full-year industry growth estimates will be reduced.?

Intel, AMD?s much bigger rival, also experienced a slowdown in the second quarter and sees sluggish conditions persisting in the third quarter. Unlike AMD, though, Intel still produced second-quarter earnings above analyst projections and investors appear confident in the company?s ability to manage its way through whatever difficulty might be ahead. The same appears to hold true for IBM, which raised its earnings guidance for the second half of the year, even though it expects Europe?s weakened currency to decrease revenue slightly from last year.

The swing in currency rates also represents a drag on Google?s revenue growth, but the Internet search leader is offsetting some of that by tweaking its technology to aim more online ads at Web surfers most likely to click on them. The additional clicks translate to more revenue for Google.

The shift away from PCs shaped Microsoft?s redesign of the Windows operating system, which runs on most desktop and laptop computers. Microsoft has tailored Windows 8 so it can also power touch-based tablet computers, including a device called Surface that the software maker plans to release to compete against the iPad.

Investors have such high hopes for Windows 8 ?due to hit the market Oct. 26? that they have been betting Microsoft will end the year with a bang as consumers and businesses snap up new machines running on the revamped operating system. Not even last week?s announcement of Microsoft?s first quarterly loss in its 26-year history as a public company could dampen the good vibes that have been lifting Microsoft?s stock. The loss stemmed from a $6.2 billion charge for a soured acquisition from five years ago. But it was an afterthought for investors as they gaze into the future and try to figure out what?s ahead.

NRG Energy to buy GenOn in $1.7B stock deal

(AP) ? NRG Energy said Sunday that it reached an agreement to buy wholesale power provider GenOn Energy in an all-stock deal worth about $1.7 billion.

Under terms of the deal, GenOn Energy Inc. shareholders will get 0.1216 of a NRG Energy Inc. share for each of their GenOn shares. Based on NRG's Friday closing stock price, the offer equates to about $2.20 per GenOn share. That represents about an 18 percent premium over Houston-based GenOn's Friday closing stock price.

NRG, based in Princeton, N.J., sells power on the wholesale market and to retail customers in states that have deregulated their electric power industry. It said the acquisition will allow it to cut costs, while boosting efficiency and cash flow.

"This combination ushers in a new era of scale, scope, and market and fuel diversification in the competitive power industry," NRG President and CEO David Crane said in a statement.

NRG expects the higher profits and lower costs stemming from the deal to increase its free cash flow by about $300 million per year.

NRG has been hurt by a long and steep decline in wholesale power prices. Prices have fallen because electricity demand has been soft in the sluggish economy and because the price of natural gas, which is used by many utilities to run generators, has fallen to its lowest level in years. Also, the mild winter across much of the country reduced demand for heating across the country and dented the profits of electric companies.

In May NRG posted a first-quarter loss of $209 million, or 92 cents per share. GenOn, which was formed through the combination of Mirant and RRI Energy in 2010, lost $32 million, or 4 cents per share in its first quarter.

Once the deal closes NRG shareholders will own 71 percent of the combined company and GenOn shareholders will own 29 percent. Four members of GenOn's board will join NRG's board, with GenOn Chairman and CEO Edward Muller becoming the board's vice chairman.

The deal is subject to approval by the shareholders of both companies, as well as federal and state regulators. It's expected to close by the first quarter of next year, the companies said.

Also on Sunday, NRG said that it will pay its first common stock dividend. A dividend of 9 cents per share will be paid on Aug. 15 to shareholders of record as of Aug. 1.

Firefighters and police gather after an explosion could be heard outside the apartment of James Holmes in Aurora, Colo., Saturday, July 21, 2012. Federal authorities detonated one small explosive and disarmed another inside Holmes' apartment, but several other explosive devices remained, said Aurora police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson. Twelve people were killed and dozens were injured in a shooting attack early Friday at a packed movie theater during a showing of the Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises." Police have identified Holmes, 24, as the suspected shooter. (AP Photo/Ed Andrieski)

(AP) ? A federal law enforcement official says the semi-automatic assault rifle used in the deadly Colorado movie theater shooting jammed during the attack.

The official said late Saturday the rifle had a high-capacity ammunition magazine which, based on witness accounts and evidence collected at the scene, apparently jammed. The rifle's malfunction then forced the suspected shooter, James Holmes, to switch to another weapon.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates has said a 100-round drum magazine was recovered at the scene of the shooting in suburban Denver. Oates said such a weapon was capable of firing 50 to 60 rounds a minute.

Police said Holmes also had two Glock pistols and a shotgun.

Holmes, a 24-year-old former graduate student, is in custody. The attack early Friday killed 12 people and wounded nearly 60 others.

Colorado shooting: Picture emerges of chaotic scene, suspect James Holmes

Colorado shooting at?a midnight showing of 'The Dark Knight Rises' resulted in 12 killed and 59 wounded. Police say James Holmes, the suspect, acted alone and had no criminal record or ties to terrorism.

Details about what happened this tragic Friday in Aurora, Colo., are beginning to emerge, painting a picture of several horrific minutes in a movie theater and the young man who allegedly shot 71 people gathered for a midnight showing of ?The Dark Knight Rises.?

As hundreds of police and FBI investigators continue what is likely to be months of work, mental-health professionals are gathering in Aurora to counsel those who witnessed the shooting and may be experiencing post-traumatic stress.

Arrested behind the theater shortly after the shooting ended, James Holmes is described by law-enforcement officials as in his mid-20s with no police record other than a traffic stop, with no known connection to terrorism, and without accomplices.

He is reported to have grown up in the San Diego area, attending high school and college there before moving to Colorado to pursue a doctoral degree in neuroscience at the University of Colorado in Denver, although he was in the process of withdrawing from that graduate program.

Initial reports indicate that Mr. Holmes entered the theater with others, propped open an exit door near the screen, then went back outside to reenter through that door once the movie had begun.

At a press conference Friday, Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said Holmes was dressed in black and was wearing SWAT-type ballistic protective garments from head to foot, including a helmet and gas mask. That might have indicated an intention to engage in a gunfight with police, but he surrendered without resisting arrest.

Upon entering the theater, he allegedly set off two smoke devices, then began shooting. As of this writing, 71 people are known to have been shot. Ten of them were killed at the scene and two later died at hospitals. Several of the victims were young children, and several others were service personnel from nearby military bases.

?He looked like an actor showboating for the premi?re and getting everyone riled up,? Jennifer Seeger told Newsweek?s Daily Beast website. ?No one thought it was real. Then he threw a gas canister and started shooting at the ceiling, and everyone realized it was real.?

?He just went up and down the stairs on the left side, shooting people and reloading,? Ms. Seeger said. ?I couldn?t breathe because of the gas. Anytime he came near, we just played dead.?

Theater patrons immediately began calling 911, and within less than two minutes police were on the scene.

Some reports say Holmes had dyed his hair red or orange and told police he was ?The Joker? ? Batman?s nemesis in an earlier film in the superhero series.

Based on what police say Holmes told them, officers quickly went to his apartment, which Chief Oates said had been ?booby-trapped with chemical and incendiary devices and tripwires.? Five buildings in the apartment complex were quickly evacuated.

According to FBI Special Agent James Yacone, about 100 agents have joined other law-enforcement agencies in collecting evidence. That includes Holmes?s phone, e-mail, and travel records, as well as information about his gun arsenal.

?At this point, we don?t see a nexus to terrorism, but we are continuing to look,? Mr. Yacone said.

Police say Holmes carried a Smith & Wesson AR-15 assault rifle, a Remington 12-gauge shotgun, and a .40 caliber Glock handgun. Another .40 caliber Glock was found in the car. All those weapons may be legally owned in Colorado.

How many shots were fired remains unclear, but Oates says it was ?many, many.?

It was the worst mass shooting in the United States since the 2009 attack at Fort Hood, Texas. Maj. Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others.

Friday morning?s rampage was the deadliest in Colorado since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, when students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold?opened fire in the Denver suburb of Littleton, killing 12 classmates and a teacher and wounding 26 others before killing themselves.

Columbine High is about 12 miles from the theater where the Friday shootings took place.

President Obama cut short a campaign trip to Florida, returning to Washington to meet with FBI Director Robert Mueller, Homeland Security adviser John Brennan, and other federal officials.

Mr. Obama ordered US flags to be flown at half-staff through July 25 ?as a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on July 20, 2012, in Aurora, Colorado.?

"As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family," Obama said in a statement. "All of us must have the people of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends, and neighbors."

Likewise, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney curtailed his campaign activities Friday.

?Our hearts break with the sadness of this unspeakable tragedy. Ann and I join the president and first lady and all Americans in offering our deepest condolences for those whose lives were shattered in a few moments, a few moments of evil in Colorado,? Mr. Romney told a crowd of supporters in Bow, N.H.

Among many other statements of sympathy and prayerful wishes was this one from Holmes?s family in San Diego:

"Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved. We ask that the media respect our privacy during this difficult time. Our family is cooperating with authorities in both San Diego, California, and Aurora, Colorado. We are still trying to process this information and we appreciate that people will respect our privacy.?

Holmes is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

London 2012: Sherif Farrag, American Muslim, Debates How Best To Compete During Ramadan Fast

As the first fasting day of Ramadan began at dawn on Friday, Sherif Farrag expected, in some ways, to find the Islamic holy month a little easier to manage than he has for much of his life.

A Bayonne, N.J., resident who is spending the first days of Ramadan in Cairo to train with Egypt's Olympic fencing team, he is surrounded by Muslims observing the Islamic tradition. Restaurants close during daylight hours. City life pauses as Muslims make five prayers each day. Nobody will give him a second look or ask for a primer when he abstains from food and water. And when Farrag flies to London the next week, he'll be in a country where Islam is the second-largest religion and he'll be among more than 3,000 Muslims competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

But as competition day nears, he will face a tough choice: Should he break his fast?

"My goal has always been to compete internationally in the Olympics," said Farrag, 25, who comes from a family of fencers and first picked up a foil -- the long, thin blade with a blunted tip most commonly used in fencing -- when he was 10.

caren seligman

Sherif Farrag, 25, will compete on the Egyptian fencing team at the London Olympics.

This will be his first, and possibly only, Olympics. Farrag is a dual citizen -- he was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and moved to the United States when he was nine -- who switched from competing for the U.S. to competing for Egypt in order to rank high enough to make the Olympic team. And now he isn't sure how far he will make it without food.

The London Olympics, which run from July 27 to Aug. 12, fall entirely within Ramadan, the holiest Islamic month when Muslims stay away from food, water, smoking, sex and negative thoughts during the daytime while focusing on prayer and community. Many Muslim Olympians have said they will not fast at all in London, while some have said they will only take a break from the tradition on the days they compete.

Farrag said he's certain he will fast during training before the competition, when "practices aren't heavy at all." He's done it in previous years, when Ramadan, whose dates are based on a lunar calendar, has fallen later in the summer and he was nearing national competitions.

But having worked 15 years for as few as nine minutes in the international spotlight -- if he doesn't advance, he will at least compete in three bouts of three minutes each -- the decision on game day is harder.

Two years ago, not long after his 2009 graduation from Columbia University with a degree in political science and Middle Eastern studies, he pushed himself to prepare for a national tournament, in which he hoped success would help him move up in rank and eventually qualify for the Olympics. It was early August, and Ramadan was just beginning.

"I was really focused on, well, this is my dream and I have to eat and I have to work out if I'm going to win," said Farrag, who stands six feet tall and weighs 162 pounds. He skipped fasting for about one-third of the month and engaged in hours-long plyometric exercises.

The regimen worked. Farrag advanced in competitions, but he felt regret. "I began to realize that life is not about some kind of goal or medals, but more about the process of living," he said.

This year, the pressure will be stronger and the athletes will be quicker.

"It's very strenuous to compete. It's pretty much the entire body. A lot of footwork, and you have to be explosive. It's closer to sprinting. You have to be like a cat," explained Farrag. "But just like eating and drinking helps you with life, when you're in a fasting state of mind, it does help you mentally and spiritually."

As he approaches the London games, Farrag said he's turned to God to help him chart his course.

A regular at his New Jersey mosque and the Park51 mosque in downtown New York, he has started to pray five times daily in the last year and is attending several mosques in Egypt.

Islamic scholars agree that there are many exceptions allowing Muslims to skip fasts as long as the fasting days are made up later. One of those exceptions is when Muslims are traveling, such as for the Olympics. In Egypt, some clerics have made declarations that Olympic competitors may skip the fast.

But Farrag's decision isn't about what's permitted in Islam. It's about the route to victory: Sustenance or spirituality?

As he ponders his post-Olympic life, which could include applying to law school or earning a master's degree in political science, he's also getting closer to a decision about how to approach the games.

"It's Ramadan, it's big," Farrag said. "I don't know. Sometimes there are things more important than winning or losing."

Windows Phone Kodak Pic Flick app pushes photos to printers -- as long as you have version 7.5

Kodak Pic Flick app moves photos from Windows Phones to printers and digital frames as long as you have the latest software

Kodak's recent announcements may have circled around patent brawls (and victories), but if you've indentured yourself to the company's range of all-in-one printers and digital photo frames, you might want to pick up its new Windows Phone app. Pic Flick will share your images with compatible hardware through WiFi -- provided you're connected to the same network on your phone. It's largely identical to the existing iOS version, albeit cocooned in Microsoft's metro style, and includes a handful of simple editing tools and filters. However, you will need to check that your Windows Phone is running version 7.5 or later. If you pass that requirement, hit up the source for the download.

It's time to survey, and protest, Emmy nominations

That sound drowning out the applause for this year's Emmy nominees announced Thursday morning is the grinding of teeth over worthy shows and stars Emmy ignored.

For instance, Jeff Probst already has four Emmys for hosting CBS' "Survivor." But did he deserve to get voted off the Emmy island when this year's nominations were handed out?

What about "The Killing"? Viewers were disgruntled by the mystery underlying this AMC drama, but you didn't have to care who killed Rosie Larsen to realize that co-stars Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman gave two of the year's best performances.

Sure, Fox's "American Idol" has slipped in the ratings, and two of its judges are jumping ship. But does that explain why this TV juggernaut has been snubbed for a nomination as best reality-competition program ? for the first time ever?

Meanwhile, Fox's "House," which recently ended its eight-year run, goes empty-handed into Emmy annals deprived of one last chance for a best drama trophy, or a best actor nod for its star, Hugh Laurie.

Other lame-duck series are getting a similar Emmy cold shoulder.

FX's firefighter drama "Rescue Me" has now concluded its seven-year run with routine Emmy neglect for this outstanding series and its gifted star-writer-producer.

And ABC's much-honored "Desperate Housewives" will be remembered in its eighth and last season only with a nomination for the late Kathryn Joosten in the category of supporting actress in a comedy.

FX scored big with its splendid comedy "Louie" and its creepy "American Horror Story." But why not some Emmy love for "Sons of Anarchy," the network's riotous motorcycle-gang drama that boasts a gang of wonderful actors, including 2011 Golden Globe winner Katey Sagal?

Emmy continues to shrink from vampire and zombies. Again this year, both wildly popular "True Blood" on HBO and "The Walking Dead" on AMC were shut out of major drama awards.

HBO's mystical comedy-drama "Enlightened" was spurned, as was its co-creator and star, Laura Dern, whose Golden Globe-winning performance as its scrambled heroine is among the best of her career.

And while all six regulars on "Modern Family" snagged nominations, a fellow ABC comedy, "Happy Endings," went unnoticed by Emmy, as did its six excellent co-stars.

Not one, but two freshman drama series on the Starz network were overlooked: "Boss," starring Kelsey Grammer as the tyrannical mayor of Chicago, and "Magic City," set in the sordid glamour of 1960s Miami Beach. But both series will be courting Emmy with second seasons.

With the broadcast networks continuing to cede Emmy glory to cable, Emmy seemed suitably unimpressed with last season's new crop of broadcast shows.

Only nine freshman series on the five broadcast networks got so much as a lone minor nomination, and only one, Fox's comedy "New Girl," scored a major acting nod. In fact, it got two of them: for lead actress Zooey Deschanel and supporting actor Max Greenfield.

But what about two other breakout hits from last season: CBS' sitcom "2 Broke Girls" and ABC's fairy-tale drama "Once Upon a Time"?

Couldn't Emmy have made room for at least one of the funny "Broke" co-stars, Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs? And why was Emmy blind to the spell cast by any of the "Once Upon a Time" ensemble?

When it comes to Emmys, AMC's "Mad Men" has nothing to complain about. The advertising drama continues its reign this year by picking up a leading 17 Emmy nominations. But, oddly, none of those was for costumes. Even though the series has never won in this category, it has landed a best costume nomination every year since "Mad Men" began. Why none this year? Viewers who savor the characters' eye-popping '60s sartorial style have to be wondering.

If Emmy's annual bumper crop for "Mad Men" has become ritual, another of this year's big scorers is, by contrast, a big surprise. "Hatfields & McCoys," a three-night miniseries that aired at the end of May, made history on ? fittingly ? History channel by averaging 13.8 million viewers as the most-watched miniseries ever on cable.

Following on that ratings triumph, the program (recounting the famous interfamily feud) collected 16 nominations. Nothing to argue about there: This is the sort of out-of-nowhere surprise that Emmy watchers thrive on.
