IVR Process Can Challenge Sex Life | Psych Central News

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on October 31, 2012

IVR Process Can Challenge Sex LifeA new study discovers that infertility treatment can negatively impact a women?s sex life. Despite the importance of sex in conceiving a child, little attention has been given to the sexual dynamics of couples as they work to overcome infertility challenges.

?Sex is for pleasure and for reproduction, but attention to pleasure often goes by the wayside for people struggling to conceive,? said Nicole Smith, a doctoral student with Indiana University?s Center for Sexual Health Promotion.

Smith is conducting the study in collaboration with Jody Lyne? Madeira, Ph.D.

?With assisted reproductive technologies (ART), couples often report that they feel like a science experiment, as hormones are administered and sex has to be planned and timed. It can become stressful and is often very unromantic and regimented; relationships are known to suffer during the process.?

Researchers say the study is one of the first in the United States to examine women?s sexual experiences while undergoing assisted reproductive technologies. Investigators used a Sexual Functioning Questionnaire to assess the impact of IVF treatment on couples? sexual experiences.

Compared to a sample of healthy women, women undergoing IVF reported significantly less sexual desire, interest in sexual activity and satisfaction with their sexual relationship. They had more difficulty with orgasm and were more likely to report sexual problems such as vaginal pain and dryness.

Experts have recognized that emotional and relationship challenges intensify as a couple?s use of ART proceeded. Attention to challenges in having sex has somehow escaped the purview of key parties.

When couples meet with their physicians, their sex life might not top the list of issues they want to discuss, either because of unease talking about the subject or simply because they have so many other important issues to discuss.

Still, Smith and Madeira say, the doctor-patient relationship is key, and couples can be told up front about the potential sexual side effects and resources that can help.

If they have issues with dryness, for example, they could be counseled on remedies such as purchasing lubricant or other sexual enhancement products. In addition to referring couples to mental health counselors, reproductive endocrinologists could also refer them to sex therapists.

?There?s just a dearth of knowledge on how infertility affects sexual behavior,? Madeira said. ?The focus is more likely to be on the social and support dimensions of the relationship, but sex is a big part of that. Just letting patients know they aren?t alone in this would be helpful.?

If more information about sexual challenges becomes available, couples might find it on their own.

?Women interested in ART are generally well-educated and tend to spend time researching these issues,? Madeira said. ?They would be very responsive to this information, and proactive.?

The study involved 270 women who completed an online questionnaire; interviews with 127 men and women using IVF to try to conceive; and interviews with 70 professionals, including physicians, nurses, mental health experts and other providers who work directly with patients.

IVF is a procedure in which mature eggs are retrieved from a woman?s ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a lab, forming embryos. The embryo(s) are then implanted in the woman?s uterus. It is considered an effective procedure but one that is used after couples try several other less invasive procedures.

By the time couples begin IVF, they might have been trying to conceive for many years. Nine percent of the women in their study had been through five IVF cycles, which could take at least a year.

Here are some of their other findings:

  • Women who reported being sexually active with a partner in the past month also were more likely to engage in masturbation and report fewer sexual problems;
  • The women reported similar problems with sexual function regardless of the type or source of infertility involved: male factor, female factor, or both male and female factor;
  • Hormonal treatments used in assisted reproductive technologies likely affect women?s sexual experiences and pain, but these effects are not as well understood and receive less priority than other conditions, such as heart disease and cancer.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) ? It's scratchy, lasts only 78 seconds and features the world's first recorded blooper.

The modern masses can now listen to what experts say is the oldest playable recording of an American voice and the first-ever capturing of a musical performance, thanks to digital advances that allowed the sound to be transferred from flimsy tinfoil to computer.

The recording was originally made on a Thomas Edison-invented phonograph in St. Louis in 1878.

At a time when music lovers can carry thousands of digital songs on a player the size of a pack of gum, Edison's tinfoil playback seems prehistoric. But that dinosaur opens a key window into the development of recorded sound.

"In the history of recorded sound that's still playable, this is about as far back as we can go," said John Schneiter, a trustee at the Museum of Innovation and Science, where it will be played Thursday night in the city where Edison helped found the General Electric Co.

The recording opens with a 23-second cornet solo of an unidentified song, followed by a man's voice reciting "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "Old Mother Hubbard." The man laughs at two spots during the recording, including at the end, when he recites the wrong words in the second nursery rhyme.

"Look at me; I don't know the song," he says.

When the recording is played using modern technology during a presentation Thursday at a nearby theater, it likely will be the first time it has been played at a public event since it was created during an Edison phonograph demonstration held June 22, 1878, in St. Louis, museum officials said.

The recording was made on a sheet of tinfoil, 5 inches wide by 15 inches long, placed on the cylinder of the phonograph Edison invented in 1877 and began selling the following year.

A hand crank turned the cylinder under a stylus that would move up and down over the foil, recording the sound waves created by the operator's voice. The stylus would eventually tear the foil after just a few playbacks, and the person demonstrating the technology would typically tear up the tinfoil and hand the pieces out as souvenirs, according to museum curator Chris Hunter.

Popping noises heard on this recording are likely from scars left from where the foil was folded up for more than a century.

"Realistically, once you played it a couple of times, the stylus would tear through it and destroy it," he said.

Only a handful of the tinfoil recording sheets are known to known to survive, and of those, only two are playable: the Schenectady museum's and an 1880 recording owned by The Henry Ford museum in Michigan.

Hunter said he was able to determine just this week that the man's voice on the museum's 1878 tinfoil recording is believed to be that of Thomas Mason, a St. Louis newspaper political writer who also went by the pen name I.X. Peck.

Edison company records show that one of his newly invented tinfoil phonographs, serial No. 8, was sold to Mason for $95.50 in April 1878, and a search of old newspapers revealed a listing for a public phonograph program being offered by Peck on June 22, 1878, in St. Louis, the curator said.

A woman's voice says the words "Old Mother Hubbard," but her identity remains a mystery, he said. Three weeks after making the recording, Mason died of sunstroke, Hunter said.

A Connecticut woman donated the tinfoil to the Schenectady museum in 1978 for an exhibit on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Edison company that later merged with another to form GE. The woman's father had been an antiques dealer in the Midwest and counted the item among his favorites, Hunter said.

In July, Hunter brought the Edison tinfoil recording to California's Berkeley Lab, where researchers such as Carl Haber have had success in recent years restoring some of the earliest audio recordings.

Haber's projects include recovering a snippet of a folk song recorded a capella in 1860 on paper by Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville, a French printer credited with inventing the earliest known sound recording device.

Haber and his team used optical scanning technology to replicate the action of the phonograph's stylus, reading the grooves in the foil and creating a 3D image, which was then analyzed by a computer program that recovered the original recorded sound.

The achievement restores a vital link in the evolution of recorded sound, Haber said. The artifact represents Edison's first step in his efforts to record sound and have the capability to play it back, even if it was just once or twice, he said.

"It really completes a technology story," Haber said. "He was on the right track from the get-go to record and play it back."

Four New Temporary Cold-weather Shelters in Vancouver

?

VANCOUVER The B.C. government and the City of Vancouver will open four additional temporary winter shelters in Vancouver to meet the needs of those living on the streets during the cold and wet weather season.

?

This agreement with the City represents our mutual commitment to help end street homelessness in our cities, said Premier Christy Clark. These accommodations will go a long way towards getting people off the streets and into more permanent housing. This will allow us to connect people with the support services they need so they can begin making positive changes in their lives.

?

These shelters will provide over 160 spaces for the homeless between the end of November 2012 and May 2013. Raincity Housing and Support Society will operate and provide supports at the shelters and link people to housing and community based support services.

?

Shelter is the single most urgent need for citizens who are homeless during the cold and wet months of winter, especially for those who live with disabilities, addiction or mental health challenges, said Mayor Gregor Robertson. "This initiative will help more people in need connect with crucial support services and begin a journey out of homelessness. These new shelter spaces reflect our firm conviction that no one should ever be forced to sleep on the street and our commitment to ending street homelessness by 2015.

?

The Province will provide up to $1.6 million in funding to operate the shelter spaces and the City will identify and provide the sites.

?

The B.C. government has also agreed to make funding available for 100 transition housing spaces in Vancouver that will operate for approximately 18 months while the balance of the 14 new supportive housing developments are completed. Seven of the developments are currently open. The remainder are under construction or in development. The City will provide the sites for the transition spaces.

?

There are 638 permanent, year-round shelter beds and approximately 200 temporary year-round HEAT shelter beds in Vancouver.

?

For the last three years, the government of B.C. has opened approximately 160 additional 24/7 shelter spaces in the city for the cold winter months in addition to Extreme Weather Response spaces that are available when an extreme weather alert is activated by the community. The B.C. government spends close to $24 million annually to fund services for Vancouvers homeless. This includes permanent and temporary shelters as well as homeless outreach.

?

?

Quick Facts:

?

???????? Since launching the provincial housing strategy, Housing Matters BC, in 2006 more than 12,000 people have been helped to move off the streets and into permanent housing.

???????? Last fiscal year, approximately $80 million was provided to ensure that emergency shelters are available in communities throughout B.C. This includes permanent, year-round shelter beds as well as extreme weather and temporary shelter spaces.

???????? There are now more than 1,600 permanent year-round shelter beds in 33 communities almost double the approximately 880 that existed in 2001.

???????? Funding increases since 2007 mean that most shelters are now open 24/7 people no longer have to line up at night they can remain safe and stable while being connected to community services including more permanent forms of housing. Ninety-five per cent of shelters also provide three meals a day.

???????? During the cold winter months, the B.C. government funds additional shelter spaces to ensure everyone has access to a safe, warm place at night. This past winter, more than 1,300 spaces were identified in 35 communities across British Columbia through our Extreme Weather Response program. The extreme weather shelter spaces are activated when an Extreme Weather Alert is issued the community.

Andy Serkis Directing New Animal Farm Movie

Andy Serkis is obsessed with the animal kingdom. Not happy playing all primates great and small in King Kong and Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, his next move behind the camera will reportedly see him rework George Orwell?s barnyard epic, Animal Farm.

?I think we found a rather fresh way of looking at it,? says Serkis in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. ?It is definitely using performance capture, but we are using an amalgamation of filming styles to create the environments.?

Telling the story of a farmyard coup spearheaded by a power-crazed pig named Napoleon, Orwell?s allegorical tale mirrors the circumstances that led to Stalin?s rise to power, although it seems as though Serkis isn?t planning to go into the politics too deeply.

?We?re keeping it fable-istic and [aimed at] a family audience. We are not going to handle the politics in a heavy-handed fashion. It is going to be emotionally centred in a way that I don?t think has been seen before. The point of view that we take will be slightly different to how it is normally portrayed. We are examining this in a new light.?

Just how you can retell Animal Farm without bringing the politics to the forefront remains to be seen, although the ?50s animation already presented a moderately sanitised version of the original text. In any case, we can at least expect it to look rather special, with Serkis toying with the idea of doing some of the mo-cap acting himself.

?It might well be that I do, but nothing is set in stone yet," he says. "At the moment I?m very fixed on the creation of the characters and world from a directorial point of view."

Regaining the confidence of the selectors is not going to be easy, admits John Hastings ? Cricket News Update

John Hastings, the Australian fast bowler, is fit once again and has started playing Sheffield Shield cricket in the country but the New South Welshmen understands that making his way into the national team is not going to be a walk in the park for him.

Having done brilliantly in junior cricket and at the first-class level, the right-arm fast bowler made his way to the Australian limited-over squad in 2010. The lanky fast bowler was also a part of the Baggy Greens in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, where the Kangaroos failed to defend their world-title for the third consecutive time.

After the tour of Sri Lanka in the same year, Hastings injured his shoulder and remained out of competitive cricket for almost a year. Since then, a number of budding fast bowlers have emerged through the ranks of domestic cricket in the country, with the likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and James Pattinson already making a mark at the global level.

The 26-year-old cricketer, who is currently representing Victoria in Sheffield Shield cricket, believes that he could have cemented his place in the national team had he stayed fit.

"The timing of it wasn't great," Hastings said. "I pulled out of the South African series in 2011. It seems a long time ago now. It wasn't a great time for me. I probably would have been on that tour and if I'd done well there, who knows, Tests might have been around the corner as well. ?

Hastings has so far played 21 first-class matches, picking up 76 scalps at a reasonable average of 22.84 runs per wicket. He is quite handy with the bat as well, already having a couple of four-day half-centuries under his belt.

The strongly-built cricketer understands that making a comeback in international cricket is not going to be easy for him but the fast bowler is not prepared to give it up.

?But to have such a long time out of the game it's going to take me a long time to gain the selectors' trust again and get back in that side,? he added.

LG announces Windows 8 slider laptop and allinone PC

Windows 8 imminent launch continues to draw out even more devices in almost every permutation imaginable. LG's up next, with its collection ranging from a familiar-looking V325 all-in-one PC, through to a slider PC with tablet skills. The size of LG's 11.6-inch H160 hybrid means we're not certain whether it'll be running Windows RT or the more power-intensive complete package. LG's brief explanation below the press shots also suggests we're only looking at two models for now -- despite the three devices on show here; presumably that tablet is just the laptop transformed, given that the company decided to put that particular family of devices on the back burner. The hybrid laptop houses its own auto-slide button, and measures in at 15.9mm thick, despite the built-in keyboard. The 11.6-inch screen is another LG-made IPS panel, promising up to 178 degrees of crisp visibility, while the manufacturer expects the battery to last up to 10 hours. Connectivity encompasses WiFi, HDMI output and a USB port and -- according to Google's translation -- a microSD card slot. The device will have to compete for fans against Sony's similarly-sliding VAIO Duo 11 -- not to mention Toshiba's U925t Ultrabook.

The touchscreen AIO PC packs all the thinking parts behind a 23-inch screen, with up to 10-point touch sensitivity. There's a (presumably Korea-only) TV tuner built-in, which can be activated without powering up the whole PC, while processing powering is provided by a third-generation Core i5 processor and NVIDIA's GeForce GT640M. Both devices are currently set to remain on home turf for now, starting from October 26th and will be accompanied by LG's latest range of Ultrabooks, refreshed with Windows 8 software.

Armstrong says last few weeks 'difficult'

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Lance Armstrong greeted about 4,300 cyclists at his Livestrong charity's fund-raiser bike ride Sunday, then retreated into privacy as cycling officials get set to announce if they will appeal his lifetime ban and loss of seven Tour de France titles ordered by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

Armstrong spoke briefly at the sunrise start of the ride, telling the crowd he's faced a "very difficult" few weeks. But he did not otherwise mention USADA's report detailing evidence of performance-enhancing drug use by Armstrong and his teams or the sanctions.

International Cycling Union (UCI) President Pat McQuaid has scheduled a Monday news conference in Geneva where he's expected to announce if the sport's governing body will accept or appeal the sanctions to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

"I've been better, but I've also been worse," Armstrong, a cancer survivor, told the crowd, repeating a line from his remarks at Livestrong's 15th anniversary celebration Friday night.

Armstrong wore a black t-shirt instead of the charity's signature yellow derived from the yellow jerseys given to the winner of the Tour de France.

"Live strong, be safe," Armstrong said before the first riders left the gate.

Armstrong stepped down as chairman of Livestrong on Wednesday. That same day, most of his personal sponsors, including Nike and brewing giant Anheuser-Busch, dropped their contracts with him or said they would not renew when current deals expire.

USADA has said Armstrong should be banned and stripped of his Tour de France his titles for what the agency called "the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen" within his U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel teams.

The USADA report said Armstrong and his teams used steroids, the blood booster EPO and blood transfusions. The report included statements from 11 former teammates who testified against Armstrong.

Armstrong denies doping, pointing to hundreds of passed drug tests. But he chose not to fight USADA in one of the agency's arbitration hearings, saying the process was biased against him. Former Armstrong team director Johan Bruyneel is also facing doping charges, but he is challenging the USADA case in arbitration.

Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme is waiting on the UCI's decision before removing Armstrong's name from the record books as the race prepares to celebrate its centenary edition next year.

Armstrong won consecutive Tours from 1999-2005. Prudhomme said the Tour will have no official winners for the seven races Armstrong won if he is stripped of his victories by the UCI.

USADA has said the Tour titles should not be given to other riders who finished on the podium. The agency said 20 of the 21 riders on the podium in the Tour from 1999 through 2005 have been "directly tied to likely doping through admissions, sanctions, public investigations" or other means. It added that of the 45 riders on the podium between 1996 and 2010, 36 were by cyclists "similarly tainted by doping."

Several riders at Sunday's event, which organizers said raised $1.7 million, said they support Armstrong completely or separate his cycling career from his charitable work. Livestrong has raised about $500 million to fight cancer and support victims since it was founded in 1997.

"If he did it, he should face the consequences," said Sonya Garrison, who was riding in memory of her grandfather and to support a friend with cancer. "But this is for the cause. More people are here for the cause than just for him."

Rider Steve Weinberg said he's "still a Lance fan" regardless of the doping charges.

"I think everyone was doing it back then," Weinberg said, noting Armstrong's passed drug tests. "That whole thing needs to go away."

Shelling in former Gaddafi stronghold demonstrates instability

Libya's leadership has struggled to impose their authority in a well-armed country. Opposing militias have been shelling Bani Walid, a former Gaddafi stronghold.

Militias, many of whom are from Misrata, have been shelling the hilltop town of 70,000 people for several days. Libyan state news agency LANA said late on Saturday 14 people had been killed and 200 injured in the fighting.

Libya's new rulers have led the nation to elections but have struggled to impose their authority on a country awash with weapons. Underscoring the chaos and confusion were conflicting reports over the fate of Gaddafi's former spokesman and his son.

While Misrata spent weeks under siege by Gaddafi forces in last year's war,?Bani Walid?was one of the towns that remained loyal to Gaddafi longest. It remains isolated from the rest of?Libya?and former rebels say it still harbours pockets of support for the old government.

"The attacks are continuing,"?Bani Walid militia?leader?Abdelkarim Ghomaid?said by phone. "The shelling is coming from all sides."

He said?Bani Walid?fighters had captured 16 cars belonging to militias from Misrata. This could not be immediately independently verified.

San Francisco - Thefts of Cell Phones Rise Rapidly Nationwide ...

San Francisco - In this tech-savvy city teeming with commuters and tourists, the cell phone has become a top target of robbers who use stealth, force and sometimes guns.

Nearly half of all robberies in San Francisco this year are cell phone-related, police say, and most occur on bustling transit lines.

One thief recently snatched a smartphone while sitting right behind his unsuspecting victim and darted out the rear of a bus in mere seconds.

Another robber grabbed an iPhone from an oblivious bus rider ? while she was still talking.

And, in nearby Oakland, City Council candidate Dan Kalb was robbed at gunpoint of his iPhone Wednesday after he attended a neighborhood anti-crime meeting.

?I thought he was going to shoot me,? recalled Kalb, who had dropped his phone during the stickup. ?He kept saying, ?Find the phone! Find the phone!??

These brazen incidents are part of a ubiquitous crime wave striking coast to coast. New York City Police report that more than 40 percent of all robberies now involve cell phones. And cell phone thefts in Los Angeles, which account for more than a quarter of all the city?s robberies, are up 27 percent from this time a year ago, police said.

?This is your modern-day purse snatching,? said longtime San Francisco Police Capt. Joe Garrity, who began noticing the trend here about two years ago. ?A lot of younger folks seem to put their entire lives on these things that don?t come cheap.?

Thefts of cell phones? particularly the expensive do-it-all smartphones containing everything from photos and music to private e-mails and bank account statements? are costing consumers millions of dollars and sending law enforcement agencies and wireless carriers nationwide scrambling for solutions.

In San Francisco, police have gone undercover and launched a transit ad campaign, warning folks to ?be smart with your smartphone.? Similar warnings went out in Oakland, where there have been nearly 1,300 cell phone robberies this year.

When Apple?s ballyhooed iPhone 5 went on sale last month, New York City police encouraged buyers to register their phone?s serial numbers with the department. That came just months after a 26-year-old chef at the Museum of Modern Art was killed for his iPhone while heading home to the Bronx.

In St. Louis, city leaders proposed an ambitious ordinance requiring anyone who resells cell phones to obtain a secondhand dealers license. Resellers also would need to record the phone?s identity number and collect detailed information including the seller?s names, addresses, a copy of their driver?s licenses ? even their thumbprints.

?It will take a national solution to make this problem go away,? St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said of the phone thefts.

Though some experts put annual cell phone losses in the billions of dollars, there is no precise figure on how many devices are stolen each year.

However, the problem has become so visible that it has caught the attention of lawmakers and regulators seeking to take the profit out of cell phone theft.

In April, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, and New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly announced that the major U.S. cell phone carriers and the Federal Communications Commission have agreed to set up a national database to track reported stolen phones. It is scheduled to launch in late 2013.

Schumer also introduced a bill called the Mobile Device Theft Deterrence Act, which proposes a five-year prison sentence for tampering with the ID numbers of a stolen cell phone. The bill is supported by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), a Washington, D.C. advocacy group.

In addition, CTIA officials said carriers are expected to launch individual databases later this month to permanently disable a cell phone reported stolen. The initiative is similar to a successful decade-old strategy in Australia.

Previously, U.S. carriers have only been able to disable so-called SIM cards, which can be swapped in and out of phones. That?s led to a profitable black market for stolen phones.

Chris Guttman-McCabe, CTIA?s vice president of regulatory affairs, said the goal of creating theft databases is to render stolen cell phones worthless.

?We want to dry up the aftermarket,? Guttman-McCabe said. ?Hopefully, there will be no sense in stealing a phone and a once valuable piece of hardware will essentially turn into useless metal.?

Right now, the incentive is to steal and that?s creating huge losses, said Kevin Mahaffey, a co-founder of Lookout, a San Francisco-based mobile security firm which has advised carriers about the national database.

?Thieves know that carrying a smartphone is like carrying $500 in your hands,? said Mahaffey. His company estimates that stolen and lost cell phones could cost American consumers more than $30 billion this year.

Many cities with highest rates of stolen and lost phones also rank among the FBI?s listing of U.S. cities with the highest crime rates, including Cleveland, Detroit, Oakland and Newark, N.J., Mahaffey said.

Meanwhile, cell phone thefts and police response continue at a frenzied pace.

In Chicago, two men were each charged with armed robbery last week after stealing an iPhone from a teen.

In Oakland, nearly three dozen people were recently arrested during a sweep for allegedly stealing smartphones. On Tuesday, police arrested 15-year-old boy who allegedly swiped a woman?s iPhone near Oakland?s City Hall and sold it in downtown San Francisco for $200 to buy marijuana.

?It?s a quick crime of opportunity, a snatch and grab, either by foot or on bike,? Officer Johnna Watson, an Oakland police spokeswoman, said. ?The thieves are gone in an instant.?

Weak earnings season casts?pall over stocks

Andrew Burton / Getty Images

A trader works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on October 19, 2012 in New York City. Stocks fell Friday after the release of poor earnings reports. Analysts say they expect more earnings-related angst to come.

By Caroline Valetkevitch, Reuters

U.S. earnings started the quarter on the wrong foot, and things have only gotten worse.

Expectations for the third quarter were dismal, with forecasts for a decline in profits from a year ago. But a recent flurry of high-profile reports has investors scowling at the weak revenue numbers, adding to worries about the state of the U.S. economy and the outlook for corporate America.

"The earnings season is not looking very bright," said Larry Peruzzi, senior equity trader at Cabrera Capital Markets Inc., in Boston.

International Business Machines , General Electric and Microsoft fell short of revenue expectations, creating a sour mood early in the third-quarter reporting period.

The third quarter is among the most important for investors and economists because it is when companies begin to give a better picture of what the following year may look like.?

The pace of earnings reports will accelerate next week, with eight Dow components and 155 S&P 500 companies scheduled to release results. Tech heavyweight Apple Inc will be among them.

Just 38 percent of S&P 500 companies beat expectations on revenue in the past week, compared with 41 percent since the start of the reporting period, and well below the 62 percent long-term average, Thomson Reuters data showed.

On the earnings side, the data has been slightly more upbeat: 62 percent of companies that reported this week beat expectations versus 60.3 percent since the start of the earnings period, and the 62 percent long-term average, the data showed.

Investors have sold off shares after weak results, and more profit taking may be in store for stocks, given the big gains they've seen since the start of the year, Peruzzi said.

Worst day in four months
Friday's sell-off gave Wall Street its worst day in four months. The market's decline came on the 25th anniversary of Black Monday, when the Dow Jones industrial average plunged 22.6 percent in its worst one-day percentage loss ever.

The S&P 500 ended the week up just 0.3 percent. That's a modest showing when compared with its gain of 2.3 percent in the first three days alone.

For the year, the benchmark S&P 500 Index is still up 14 percent.

Much is riding on Apple, especially given the weakness in technology earnings so far this reporting period. Besides IBM and Microsoft, Intel and Google disappointed Wall Street with their results this week as well. Google's big miss came as a shock to many investors.

Apple "is certainly a bellwether, and today more than any other stock, sets the mood for investors," said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors in Rochester, New York.

Besides Apple, results are expected next week from Caterpillar , Yahoo , United Parcel Service and Whirlpool .

Based on results from 116 companies and estimates for the rest, earnings for S&P 500 companies are expected to decline 1.8 percent from a year ago - the first such decline in three years. Without Apple, that decline would be about 2.3 percent, according to Thomson Reuters earnings analyst Greg Harrison.

Outlooks from U.S. companies have added to worries.

So far for the fourth quarter, there have been 17 negative outlooks from companies, no positive outlooks and one in line. That compares with 11 negative outlooks, two positive outlooks and two in line at a comparable period for third quarter guidance, Thomson Reuters data showed.

"Now is when the truth is revealed," Creatura said. "Now is when management teams begin to bracket what 2013 results might look like."

Taking some of the focus away from earnings next week will be the Federal Reserve's policy meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday. After last month's meeting, the Fed announced its third round of aggressive economic stimulus, causing stocks to rally despite a slew of earnings warnings.

While investors welcomed the Fed's plan for more economic stimulus, known as quantitative easing, the move underscored worries that the U.S. economy may be in worse shape than feared.

Worsening macroeconomic conditions, namely sluggishness in the U.S. economy along with a dramatic slowdown in Europe and weakness in China, have been among the chief reasons cited by companies in their warnings about earnings and revenue.

U.S. economic indicators to watch next week will include new home sales for September on Wednesday and durable goods orders for September on Thursday, followed by the first look at third-quarter GDP on Friday, as well as the final reading for October on consumer sentiment from the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan surveys.

Riders stranded on towering Texas fair ride

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The owner of Marlon Brando's trademark rights say that Madonna made them an offer that they refused - and now they're suing the "Hard Candy" singer for ignoring their refusal. Brando Enterprises filed suit in U.S. District Court in Central California against Madonna, along with Bhakti Touring, Inc., on Thursday, alleging that the Material Mom has been using the "Apocalypse Now" actor's image on tour without permission - in fact, according to Brando Enterprises, their representatives "expressly refused to grant such rights to the Defendants" when they were ...
